The Union Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) has unveiled a significant financial initiative aimed at promoting sustainable development in Sikkim. The announcement was made on June 1, reflecting the government’s commitment to ecological stewardship and organic farming within the state. Union MDoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia noted that Sikkim has become a prime example of responsible tourism and green agricultural practices in line with the Centre’s Act East vision.

During his visit to Gangtok for the 51st Statehood Day celebrations, Scindia unveiled the “Mission Sikkim Organics” initiative. The plan, which carries a projected budget of Rs 360 crore, aims to position Sikkim as a globally integrated organic economy. It is expected to positively impact over 66,000 farming families in the region, enhancing their agricultural productivity and income.

Financial Breakdown of the Mission and Infrastructure Projects

The proposed Rs 360 crore initiative will see MDoNER contribute Rs 85 crore specifically for infrastructure development, aggregation systems, and programme coordination. Additionally, there will be convergence with various Central ministries, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), and investments from the private sector to bolster this endeavour.

Moreover, the Centre initiated and laid foundation stones for 21 development projects valued at Rs 223 crore during the Statehood Day celebrations. These projects encompass roads, bridges, and enhancements in public connectivity, targeting improved regional access and increased economic opportunities within the state.

Noteworthy initiatives assessed during the minister’s visit include the development works at Temi Tea Estate in Namchi, the construction of Khangchendzonga State University campus in Tarku, and the Bhaleydunga Skywalk project under the PM-DevINE scheme. Scindia remarked that such initiatives exemplify Sikkim’s balanced approach to development and sustainability.

Biodiversity Conservation Efforts and Cultural Richness

During his visit, Minister Scindia praised Sikkim’s dedication to biodiversity conservation after touring the Orchidarium at Saramsa. He also engaged with local residents at MG Marg in Gangtok, underscoring the importance of community involvement in sustainable practices. The minister highlighted that the state’s rich culture, along with its commitment to environmental protection and organic identity, reinforces Sikkim’s position as a leading example for both the Northeast region and the country.

Scindia’s observations and statements reflect the Centre’s aim to not only improve Sikkim’s infrastructure but also to strengthen its ecological and agricultural frameworks. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that Sikkim remains at the forefront of sustainable development in India.

The MDoNER’s initiatives signal a significant investment in Sikkim’s future, promising substantial benefits for its residents. Through continued support and collaboration, the government aspires to enhance the state’s prospects while maintaining its ecological integrity.
