CDC Warns Against Fresh Produce Amid Cyclospora Outbreak

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent Cyclospora outbreak in the United States has caused significant concern among health officials, leading to warnings against the consumption of fresh produce. This situation has resulted in numerous hospitalisations across 18 states, with Michigan being particularly affected. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is examining over 5,000 cases linked to this outbreak, which causes a gastrointestinal illness known as Cyclosporiasis.

Understanding Cyclosporiasis

Cyclosporiasis, the illness caused by Cyclospora, is distinguished by symptoms such as prolonged diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort. Unlike more common foodborne illnesses caused by bacteria such as E. coli or Salmonella, which often lead to nausea and vomiting, Cyclospora infections predominantly affect the lower gastrointestinal tract. Patients may experience severe, watery diarrhoea that can persist for weeks, and symptoms may recur even after initially resolving.

Experts have been vocal about the nature of Cyclospora, expressing that it does not induce vomiting, and in many cases, the diarrhoea can be explosive in nature. This sets it apart from typical food poisoning cases, which are typically shorter in duration and involve a broader range of symptoms. The CDC’s current focus is on identifying the sources contributing to this outbreak.

In light of the outbreak, public health experts are strongly advising against the consumption of fresh produce, particularly salad greens and certain fruits. Reports suggest that certain suppliers of leafy greens, herbs, and berries may be implicated. Ongoing investigations are also looking into whether specific restaurant chains could be associated with the spread of the parasite.

Precautionary Measures for Consumers

As investigations unfold, health professionals have emphasised the importance of taking safety precautions when consuming fruits and vegetables. Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist affiliated with UCSF, has recommended cooking vegetables where possible to eliminate the potential for infection. He also advised consumers in outbreak zones to avoid leafy greens altogether, as washing does not effectively remove the Cyclospora parasite.

In the absence of identifiable sources, it is advisable to opt for thicker-skinned fruits like oranges and avocados, which pose a lower risk of harbouring the parasite. Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence points towards transmission routes linked to certain food establishments, which are currently under scrutiny by health authorities.

Dr. Linda Yancey, an infectious disease expert in Texas, pointed out that standard testing methods often exclude Cyclospora, making it more difficult to diagnose. Therefore, consumers should be vigilant and follow recommended safety practices regarding food handling and preparation.

Health Recommendations and Future Outlook

To protect against the Cyclospora infection and other foodborne diseases, experts recommend simple yet effective hygiene routines. Frequent handwashing with soap and water is critical, as is thoroughly rinsing all produce under running water. Additionally, any cut, peeled, or cooked items should be refrigerated within two hours to prevent bacterial growth.

Further guidance stresses that cooking can significantly reduce the risk of parasite ingestion. Foods like raspberries, blackberries, and leafy greens, which have many crevices, are more likely to harbour Cyclospora, while smoother fruits such as grapes and blueberries are easier to clean and pose lesser risks.

As of July 13, 2026, the CDC reported 1,645 confirmed cases of Cyclosporiasis across 34 states. While no fatalities have yet occurred in relation to this outbreak, health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and encourage public compliance with safety measures as investigations progress.
