“Cannot Allow Voting Rights to Bangladeshi Citizens who Entered Assam”: Nitin Gadkari

The CSR Journal Magazine

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister, has expressed that the Assam Government’s measures against what he termed “illegal immigrants” should not be associated with the Muslim community. He reaffirmed the ruling party’s position to deny voting rights to Bangladeshi nationals in the interest of national integrity. In remarks made to ANI, Gadkari asserted that the practice of taking action against individuals who unlawfully enter a country is standard worldwide and should not be tied to any specific religion.

The Minister highlighted that his comments were not a reflection of sentiment against Muslims residing in Assam but rather a matter of principle regarding national interests. He stated, “It cannot be right to give voting rights to Bangladeshi citizens who have entered Assam.” He further accused certain political factions of exploiting the situation for what he described as “vote bank politics,” prioritising their electoral gains over the nation’s welfare.

Election Context and Political Dynamics

With the Assam Assembly elections approaching, both Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been vocal regarding the issue of illegal migration, claiming it significantly alters the demographic landscape of the state. The arguments surrounding immigration are expected to be a pivotal theme in the electoral discourse as the BJP looks to secure a further term in office.

Gadkari expressed confidence in the BJP’s prospects in the elections, attributing the expected support to the development initiatives undertaken since Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014. He noted that substantial improvements have been made in infrastructure across the northeastern region, including enhancements in roads, bridges, airports, waterways, and railways.

According to Gadkari, public sentiment is shifting positively, with citizens recognising the progress that has been achieved. He stated that people can see their aspirations being met, leading to a favourable view of the government’s work. “I have full confidence that the people of Assam will once again give a big mandate to the BJP,” he declared, outlining his belief in the party’s continued electoral success.

Upcoming Election Details

The elections for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam are scheduled to take place on April 9, 2025, and vote counting will occur on May 4, 2025. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) aims to secure its third consecutive term, while the Congress Party is gearing up to challenge the ruling party in hopes of returning to power.

As the elections draw near, the political landscape in Assam is witnessing increased activities from various parties, with each side strategising to optimise their appeal to voters. The dynamics of issues related to immigration, demographic changes, and developmental narratives are likely to play a crucial role in shaping voter opinions.

Political observers are keenly watching the developments, particularly given the intertwined nature of local concerns and broader national considerations highlighted by leaders such as Gadkari. The outcome will not only determine the future governance of Assam but may also reflect underlying trends in national politics as a whole.
