Calcutta High Court Grants Interim Bail to BJP’s Rakesh Singh; Road Clear for Kolkata Port Nomination

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a move that could shift the electoral dynamics of the city, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to BJP leader Rakesh Singh. The decision, presided over by Justice Kausik Chanda, effectively removes the legal shackles preventing Singh from participating in the ongoing West Bengal Assembly elections.

The court granted the relief against a ₹1 lakh personal bond. While Singh is now free to file his nomination papers and campaign, the court has restricted his movement, stipulating that he remains within the boundaries of the Kolkata Port constituency for the time being.

The Final Selection: A Strategic Delay?

The BJP has already finalized candidates for 292 seats across five phases, leaving only the Kolkata Port seat vacant. Political analysts believe the party was strategically holding back this final name, waiting for Singh’s legal clearance.

The seat is a Trinamool Congress (TMC) stronghold, currently represented by the high-profile outgoing minister and Kolkata Mayor, Firhad Hakim. With Singh’s bail secured, a “heavyweight” clash between Hakim and Singh appears imminent.

Backgrounder: The Arrest of Rakesh Singh

Rakesh Singh’s journey to this moment has been marked by frequent legal confrontations. A former Congress leader who switched to the BJP in 2019, Singh has often been at the center of political storms in Kolkata.

The Current Case: His recent incarceration stemmed from a complaint filed at the Kasba Police Station, involving allegations of criminal intimidation and the forceful occupation of property.

The 2021 Drug Scandal: Singh previously made headlines during a controversial drug seizure case involving BJP youth activist Pamela Goswami. Goswami had alleged that Singh conspired to frame her, leading to his arrest in Galsi while he was reportedly attempting to flee the state.

The Legal Defense: Singh’s legal counsel, Mayukh Mukherjee, argued in court that the slew of FIRs against the leader were “politically motivated fabrications” intended to keep a vocal opposition voice incarcerated during the peak of the election season.

The Present Political Stakes

The Kolkata Port constituency is a critical battlefield. For the TMC, Firhad Hakim represents continuity and administrative power. For the BJP, fielding Rakesh Singh is a tactical move to deploy a “tough-on-the-ground” leader who can challenge the TMC’s organizational dominance in a sensitive urban pocket.

Now that the High Court has ruled that Singh can “contest the election and campaign within the constituency,” the BJP is expected to formally announce his name as the challenger for the 293rd seat, completing their candidate roster for the state.
