Burglary at DRDO Scientist’s Residence in Delhi

The CSR Journal Magazine

A burglary has been reported at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) residential complex in Timarpur, North Delhi, where thieves allegedly made off with valuables worth several lakhs from the home of a scientist. The incident occurred in the Ram Narain Scientist Hostel, designated as a high-security area for DRDO personnel, according to information provided by local police.

The incident came to light after neighbours observing broken locks alerted the complainant, Seema Meel, who has been posted in Chandigarh. Meel had departed Delhi on May 15 to visit family when the suspected break-in occurred. The police were informed, and she subsequently filed a complaint at the Timarpur Police Station.

In her statement, Meel claimed that burglars broke through three door locks and an almirah, gaining access to various valuables located throughout her home. The investigation commenced immediately after her report was filed.

List of Stolen Items

Authorities revealed that the stolen items comprised approximately 280 grams of gold jewellery, silver ornaments, foreign currency, cash, and luxury watches. The preliminary valuation of the items is estimated to be between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, although officials indicated that a more accurate assessment is still in progress.

The First Information Report (FIR) indicates that among the stolen articles were two Daniel Klein watches, one Timex watch, Rs 15,000 in cash, along with foreign currency consisting of 20 pounds and 50 dirhams. Additional items included a necklace set with earrings, multiple bangles, chains, and other silver ornaments.

Reports from police state that numerous pieces of jewellery, including bangles and chains, were targeted during the burglary. A police officer noted the comprehensive nature of the theft, which included cash, foreign currency, and various jewellery pieces.

Investigation Progress

In the wake of the incident, a forensic science lab (FSL) team was dispatched alongside crime branch officials to investigate the scene and collect evidence. As part of the inquiry, authorities have begun reviewing CCTV footage from both the residential complex and nearby areas to identify any potential leads.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that the culprits conducted surveillance prior to the incident, as they managed to execute the burglary when the occupants were away. Police believe the methodical approach taken in the break-in suggests planning on the part of the thieves.

A formal case has been registered at the Timarpur Police Station, which includes relevant sections pertaining to theft and housebreaking. As of now, no arrests have been made, and efforts continue to identify the individuals responsible for the crime.
