Breakthrough Achieved in Third Mountain Tunnel for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant milestone has been reached with the completion of the third mountain tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project at Ambesari village in Dahanu Taluka, Palghar district, Maharashtra. This tunnel measures 417 metres in length and 14.4 metres in width, engineered to facilitate both the upward and downward tracks of the high-speed rail corridor.

The excavation process employed a controlled drilling and blasting method from both ends of the tunnel. This technique was supplemented by the use of advanced monitoring systems and geotechnical instruments throughout the excavation phase to ensure both structural integrity and safety. These innovations played a crucial role in adhering to project requirements while mitigating risks during the operation.

Real-time monitoring systems were installed within the excavation site, comprising Surface Settlement Points (SSP), 3D target systems, strain gauges, and seismographs. These tools were vital for tracking vibration levels, tunnel behaviour, and the impact on adjacent structures throughout the drilling activities. Attention to worker safety was paramount, featuring enhanced ventilation systems, fire safety protocols, and controlled access measures alongside ongoing geotechnical assessments.

Current Progress of the Project

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project encompasses a total of eight mountain tunnels, with seven of those situated in Palghar district and one in Valsad district, Gujarat. Construction is making notable progress, having fully excavated four tunnels to date. The completed tunnels include MT-08, measuring 350 metres and finalised on October 5, 2023; MT-05, which spans 1.5 kilometres and was completed on January 2, 2026; MT-06 at 454 metres, finished on February 3, 2026; and MT-07, 417 metres long, concluded on June 1, 2026.

Active construction continues for the remaining four tunnels. For instance, MT-04 is nearly 60 per cent complete, while MT-03 has exceeded 80 per cent excavation completion. The advancement of work is also steady for MT-02 and MT-01, which are progressing according to schedule. This consistent progress has allowed for the excavation of three mountain tunnels within the last five months, reiterating the project’s rapid pace in a challenging construction environment.

The tunnels between Vapi and Boisar Bullet Train stations represent some of the most intricate sections of the project. This route traverses a crucial industrial area stretching from Boisar in Maharashtra to Vapi in Gujarat, where construction efforts are currently advancing swiftly. Within this section, the three tunnels—MT-08, MT-07, and MT-06—have been successfully excavated, demonstrating the project’s efficiency and the effective execution of engineering practices.

Forward Outlook for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Corridor

As the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor progresses, continued focus will be placed on safety and efficiency, crucial elements in large-scale infrastructure projects such as this. The successful completion of the mountain tunnels marks a significant step forward towards realising the project’s aim of establishing a high-speed rail network between the two major urban centres.

These developments are anticipated to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth in the region, as the high-speed rail system will enable faster travel times and improved access between Maharashtra and Gujarat. The completion of the entire project is aimed to facilitate significant advancements in transportation infrastructure within India.

Authorities remain committed to maintaining the momentum of the construction efforts. The collaboration of various engineering teams and the employment of advanced technology are pivotal in overcoming the challenges associated with such a complex undertaking. The project is closely monitored to ensure compliance with timelines and safety standards, aiming to benefit passengers in the near future.
