Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, fondly known as Dharam Paaji and the He-Man of Indian cinema, passed away on Monday at his Mumbai residence. The 89-year-old had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month for respiratory complications. His death has left the entire film industry and fans across the country in deep mourning.
Dharmendra’s final film will be Ikkis, scheduled to release on December 25, 2025. Prior to this, he was last seen in the 2024 romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, where he played the role of Shahid’s grandfather. He also received widespread acclaim for his performance in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani.
Dharmendra Survived by Two Wives and Six Children
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol on December 8 in Ludhiana, Punjab, he entered the film industry after marrying Prakash Kaur at the age of 19. He later married actress Hema Malini. He is survived by his wives and six children, including actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, and Ahana Deol, along with daughters Ajeeta and Vijeta.
Dharmendra made his cinematic debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and quickly became one of the most versatile actors of his generation. Known for his ability to portray both intense and comic roles with equal flair, he featured in over 300 films. Some of his most celebrated performances include Veeru in Sholay, Phool Aur Patthar, Chupke Chupke, Dharam Veer, Pratigya, and Seeta Aur Geeta.
Throughout his career, Dharmendra earned numerous accolades. He won Filmfare Awards for Best Actor for Phool Aur Patthar, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, and Resham Ki Dori. In 1997, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2012, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan. His production Ghayal, starring son Sunny Deol, also won the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
Even in his late 80s, Dharmendra stayed active on social media, sharing videos promoting healthy living, farming, and simple life lessons. Fans often saw him driving a tractor, tending to his farm, and offering advice about organic lifestyles.
PM Modi Pays Tribute to Dharmendra
The actor’s passing prompted heartfelt tributes from leaders and peers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “The passing of Dharmendra Ji marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people. Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti.”
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences, writing, “The demise of veteran actor and former Member of Parliament Shri Dharmendra Ji is a great loss to Indian cinema. One of the most popular actors, he delivered numerous memorable performances during his decades-long illustrious career. As a towering figure of Indian cinema, he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire younger generations of artistes. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted, “The passing of Dharmendra Ji, who touched the hearts of every citizen for six decades with his finest acting, is an irreplaceable loss for the Indian film world. Coming from an ordinary family, he carved an indelible identity for himself in the film industry. Dharmendra Ji was one of those rare actors who brought every character he touched to life, and through this very art, he won the hearts of millions of viewers across all age groups. Through his acting, he will forever remain among us. May God grant a place at His sacred feet to the noble soul and bestow strength upon his family and admirers to bear this sorrow. Dharmendra was cremated at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai on Monday afternoon, attended by family and Bollywood personalities. The veteran actor would have celebrated his 90th birthday on December 8.
