BMC Warns Residents of Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall After IMD’s Orange Alert for Mumbai

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has alerted residents of Mumbai after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange warning for the city. This warning, which came into effect on June 22, forecasts thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to intense rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. The winds may reach speeds of 30-40 kmph at isolated locations over the next three hours, prompting the BMC to urge residents to exercise caution.

Furthermore, the IMD’s nowcast warning indicates that these adverse weather conditions are likely to persist in various parts of Mumbai. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions during this period of inclement weather, especially due to the predicted thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

Impact of Pre-Monsoon Showers

On the morning of June 22, several areas in Mumbai, including Bandra East, experienced pre-monsoon showers. These showers brought temporary relief from the intense heat but also resulted in waterlogging and traffic disruptions in multiple locations across the city. The sudden change in weather prompted concerns about urban drainage systems and their capacity to handle heavy rainfall.

The onset of the monsoon in Mumbai is expected either later today or tomorrow, with the final announcement from the IMD contingent upon the fulfilment of all required parameters for monsoon onset. As the region anticipates the arrival of the monsoon, residents remain hopeful for respite from the sweltering weather that has currently dominated the season.

In the latest updates from the IMD, conditions are reported to be favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon into additional regions of Maharashtra, as well as parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and areas in Chhattisgarh by June 23.

Extended Weather Forecasts for the Region

The IMD’s latest bulletin indicates that very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall will likely affect northeast India until June 25, along with Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim until June 22. The weather department has also forecasted the persistence of heat wave conditions across Vidarbha, East Madhya Pradesh, and East Uttar Pradesh for the next four to five days.

In addition, Chhattisgarh is expected to experience heat wave conditions over the next three days, while similar weather phenomena are projected in Telangana for two days. Regions like Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are also included in this alert concerning increased temperatures.

The IMD predicts isolated to scattered rainfall over the Konkan and Goa region from June 21-22, with a significant intensification of rainfall activity anticipated between June 23 and June 27. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, potentially gusting up to 60 kmph, are likely over Konkan, Goa, and Marathwada during the period from June 22-25. Heavy rainfall is also forecasted for Konkan and Goa from June 22-27.
