‘BJP Targeted My Life’: Abhishek Banerjee’s Attire Torn, Glasses Broken in Crowd Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent visit by Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), devolved into chaos when he encountered a hostile crowd in Sonarpur. The visit was intended to console the family of Sanju Karmakar, who the TMC claims was a victim of post-election violence. As Banerjee arrived, he faced stone-pelting and chants of “chor chor” from a gathering of angry residents.

This event has reignited political tensions in West Bengal. The TMC has accused activists associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attack, while the BJP has distanced itself from the incident, citing longstanding public dissatisfaction with the ruling party.

Attempts to Secure Banerjee

Banerjee’s visit aimed to pay his respects to Karmakar’s grieving family. As he entered the area, a significant crowd emerged, with protesters expressing their discontent through physical and verbal assaults. Some demonstrators allegedly attempted to harm him, leading to the formation of a protective entourage comprised of security personnel and party supporters. The atmosphere became increasingly unstable, necessitating heightened security for Banerjee’s protection.

Amid the chaos, Banerjee claimed that the incident was a calculated attack by BJP activists. He asserted his decision to remain until adequate security was provided, stating, “They are trying to break the house and they want to kill me.” He also indicated that the authorities had been informed in advance about his visit, raising concerns over the lack of police presence.

Later, speaking to the press, Banerjee alleged that the entire incident was captured on camera, promising to bring the evidence to the attention of the High Court and the state’s Governor. His remarks highlighted the ongoing allegations against the BJP regarding violence and intimidation in West Bengal’s political landscape.

Public Anger and Deteriorating Situation

The confrontation underscored prevalent public grievances among certain demographics within the community. Many local residents expressed frustration over issues such as infrastructural deficiencies, alleging that years of neglect had contributed to their current struggles. One resident, highlighting the poor state of roads, lamented that nothing had improved over the last 15 years.

Others questioned Banerjee’s motives for visiting, criticising him for associating with Karmakar’s family. Accusations were made regarding Banerjee’s personal wealth, with one local alleging that he owned 17 houses and questioning how such affluence was possible. Reports of discontent continued to emerge, suggesting that many residents feel abandoned by the current governance.

As the unrest escalated, local police and central forces intervened to restore order, facilitating Banerjee’s escorted exit from the area amidst ongoing protests and hostile chants from onlookers. The TMC later released videos of the incident, reaffirming their stance that BJP-aligned activists were responsible for the violence.

Political Repercussions and Responses

Following the incident, Banerjee was admitted to a Kolkata hospital for treatment. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to the hospital was framed as a show of support, and her comments on social media denouncing the BJP further intensified the political rivalry. She called the incident a reflection of the BJP’s governance style, sharply blaming the party for the violence.

The West Bengal BJP, represented by its state president Samik Bhattacharya, condemned the attack but disavowed any affiliation with the incident. He highlighted that public outrage might have played a role in the confrontation but asserted that the BJP does not engage in such violence. Bhattacharya redirected focus to the attacks previously faced by BJP members in the state.

The events in Sonarpur have quickly emerged as a focal point in the ongoing political discourse in West Bengal. As both parties exchange accusations regarding the incident, questions remain concerning the adequacy of security measures and the potential for future violence, as tensions continue to simmer in the politically charged environment.
