“BJP puts a man who defends of rapists..”: Rahul Gandhi Attacks Pralhad Joshi, Slams BJP-led Goverment

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has directed sharp criticism at the BJP-led government for appointing Pralhad Joshi to the Education portfolio following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. During a media interaction, Gandhi accused the Prime Minister of selecting a minister who allegedly supports individuals accused of serious crimes, specifically rapists. This claim stems from allegations made by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the Lok Sabha amid discussions concerning the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill.

The remarks by Priyanka Gandhi instigated a strong rebuttal from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Joshi himself, who called for an apology and the expunging of her statements from the record. The controversy centres around Joshi’s purported remarks related to the controversial remission granted to convicts involved in the Bilkis Bano case, which gained significant attention and condemnation over the years.

Emphasis on Education Sector Issues

During his comments, Rahul Gandhi indicated that the appointment of Joshi reflects a disturbing choice given ongoing challenges in the education sector. He mentioned that the Prime Minister could have selected any capable leader for the crucial role but opted for an individual linked to contentious views on justice in cases of sexual violence. Gandhi emphasized that such a choice was not only unexpected but also troubling for the integrity of the Ministry of Education.

Priyanka Gandhi’s statement in the Lok Sabha argued that the government’s handling of education matters has been severely lacking, highlighting a systemic failure that has negatively impacted numerous students. She cited that there have been 152 instances of paper leaks in the past decade, yet there has been no accountability for those involved in such malpractices.

Furthermore, Priyanka Gandhi alleged that the education system has deteriorated due to increased political influence and centralisation efforts under the National Testing Agency (NTA). She claimed that rather than growing, the allocation for education within the overall budget had actually decreased over recent years, thereby affecting educational quality and opportunities for students across the nation.

Parliamentary Reactions and Calls for Accountability

The debate in the Lok Sabha escalated as BJP members urged Priyanka Gandhi to substantiate her claims regarding Joshi. In response, she referenced an article containing the minister’s alleged remarks, insisting that her statements were based on documented evidence. However, the atmosphere in Parliament became charged as calls for her statements to be retracted amplified, with Rijiju describing the comments as an act tantamount to character assassination.

Pralhad Joshi, for his part, vehemently rejected the accusations made by Priyanka Gandhi, asserting that such allegations should not go unchecked. He demanded her expulsion from the Parliament for spreading what he termed misinformation, further highlighting the contentious nature of the political discourse surrounding the education sector.

The developments follow Pradhan’s resignation as Education Minister amid significant student unrest related to the NEET-UG examination paper leak. As the Lok Sabha continues to deliberate on the Public Examinations Amendment Bill introduced by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, the implications of the ongoing discourse on educational integrity and governance remain prominent within the political landscape of India.
