On 25 September 2026, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders convened in New Delhi to honour Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya on his birth anniversary. The gathering served as a platform for leaders to reflect on Upadhyaya’s contributions and the enduring impact of his ideological framework, which is considered fundamental to the party’s governance model. Floral tributes were offered as a mark of respect and appreciation for his legacy.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj highlighted the lasting influence of Upadhyaya’s philosophies. She stated that his concepts, particularly ‘Integral Humanism’ and ‘Antyodaya’, remain essential to the policy decisions of the current administration. Swaraj described him as a guiding light, whose wisdom continues to be relevant even 110 years after his birth, and urged attendees to internalise his teachings for a more developed India.

Significance of Upadhyaya’s Ideology

Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra emphasised the pivotal role Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya played in shaping the ideological foundations of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which eventually became the BJP. He stressed that Upadhyaya’s philosophy, termed ‘Ekatma Manav Darshan’ or Integral Humanism, is still the core ideology that guides the party today. Malhotra pointed out that Upadhyaya’s influence has contributed to the BJP’s rise as one of the largest political parties in the world.

Expounding on the global relevance of Upadhyaya’s teachings, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari drew parallels between Upadhyaya and historical figures like Lord Krishna, who also hailed from the Braj region. Tiwari asserted that Upadhyaya’s principles, including ‘Antyodaya’ and ‘Ekatma Manav Darshan’, are now gaining traction worldwide. He expressed hope that these philosophies would be instrumental in addressing critical global issues such as terrorism and climate change.

Tiwari further claimed that poverty alleviation will only be successful when the essence of ‘Antyodaya’ is realised globally. He highlighted that the teachings of Upadhyaya provide a roadmap for tackling present-day challenges and stressed the importance of recognising his insights, especially in the context of PM Modi’s governance.

A Tribute to a Visionary Leader

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, born on 25 September 1916, was a notable political thinker and leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. His ideologies, particularly Integral Humanism and concepts of social justice and self-reliance, continue to play a significant role in shaping the mission of the BJP. Upadhyaya was instrumental in initiating the monthly publication, Rashtra Dharma, in the 1940s, aiming to propagate the ideals of Hindutva.

Throughout his political career, Upadhyaya served in various significant capacities, including General Secretary of the Jana Sangh from 1951 to 1968 and as its President. His life was cut short when he passed away under mysterious circumstances on 11 February 1968. The site of his death near Mughal Sarai junction has since been renamed Deendayal Upadhyay junction in his honour.

Upadhyaya’s commitment to raising dedicated activists imbued with idealism was pivotal in laying the ideological groundwork for the party. His vision epitomised the essence of leadership, culminating in the historic party session in 1967, which marked a significant juncture in the party’s history.
