Bihar: Court Sentences Woman, Lover to Life Imprisonment for Brutal Murder of Husband

The CSR Journal Magazine

A district court in Sheohar has sentenced a woman and her lover to life imprisonment for the cold-blooded murder of her husband, committed in 2023. District and Sessions Judge Udaywant Kumar delivered the verdict on Tuesday, finding Nisha Kumari and her lover Preetesh Kumar guilty of murdering Chandan Kumar Singh in a gruesome stabbing incident that shocked the Tariyani police station area.

Crime of Passion Turns Deadly

According to case records, the incident took place on the night of October 26, 2023, when Chandan Kumar Singh, aged 27, was found brutally murdered in his home at Chhatauni village under the Tariyani police station. The attackers stabbed him 27 times, targeting his chest, neck, arms, and stomach. Initially, Nisha Kumari claimed that robbers had broken into their house and attacked both her and her husband during a theft.

However, investigators soon uncovered evidence contradicting her statement. A mobile phone and blood-stained clothes belonging to Preetesh Kumar were recovered from the crime scene, revealing that the murder was premeditated and executed jointly by Nisha and her lover.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s cousin Vibhuti Kumar Singh, police registered a murder FIR at the Tariyani police station. Nisha, her father Manoj Kumar Singh, and Preetesh were named as primary accused. While Nisha and her father were arrested early in the investigation, Preetesh remained absconding for months before surrendering in court.

He was later granted bail by the Patna High Court, but after a petition by the victim’s family, the Supreme Court revoked his bail, leading to his re-arrest. Following a detailed investigation and the filing of a charge sheet, the case proceeded to trial.

Court Verdict and Acquittals

After examining witness testimonies and physical evidence, the District and Sessions Judge convicted Nisha Kumari and Preetesh Kumar, sentencing them to life imprisonment and imposing a fine of ₹25,000 each. Due to insufficient evidence, Nisha’s father Manoj Kumar Singh and another accused, Chandan Kumar of Vaidyanathpur, were acquitted.

The court described the act as a “betrayal of trust and humanity,” noting that Nisha conspired with her lover to eliminate her husband.

A Family Torn Apart

The victim, Chandan Kumar Singh, was the only son of the late Umashankar Singh and Urmila Devi, both teachers. His four sisters are married. Chandan had tied the knot with Nisha Kumari in 2020 and worked in a refinery in Muzaffarpur. Even after marriage, Nisha continued her relationship with Preetesh, which eventually culminated in the tragic murder.
