Bharathiar University Gets Rs 99.15 Lakh DRDO Project for Antidote Research

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bharathiar University in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has been granted a significant research project praised by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The project, titled “Development of Novel Antidote(s) for Highly Toxic Organophosphorous Compounds,” is financially supported with a total allocation of Rs 99.15 lakhs. This initiative will be conducted at the DRDO Industry Academia – Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) located at the university and is set to span over 36 months.

The project aims to conduct comprehensive research to create advanced antidotes targeting the detrimental effects posed by organophosphorous compounds, known for their high levels of toxicity. Leading this endeavor is Dr. N Jayakumar, who is a Professor and Head at Bharathiar University, serving as the Principal Investigator. Dr. S Suja, also a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, will take on the role of Co-Principal Investigator. Under their guidance, the research team will systematically explore effective methods to counteract the impacts of these hazardous substances.

Organophosphorous compounds, commonly used in agricultural and industrial settings, can have severe repercussions on human health as they adversely affect the nervous system. Exposure to these toxic agents frequently leads to serious health complications, underscoring the urgent need for effective antidotes, according to an official statement.

The primary aim of the project is to design and formulate novel antidote molecules that can neutralize the toxic impacts of organophosphorous compounds. Utilizing advanced biochemical and molecular research techniques, the team will investigate potential therapeutic agents and assess their effectiveness. The research will incorporate a variety of modern scientific methods, including biochemical analysis, molecular evaluation, and pharmacological testing. Outcomes from this initiative are anticipated to provide substantial contributions to the fields of defence research, toxicology, and medical science.

With advancements in antidote development, the initiative strengthens preparedness for dealing with chemical exposure, greatly enhancing the nation’s capabilities in defensive measures against chemical threats. Bharathiar University has been recognized for its dedication to high-quality research across diverse disciplines, forging strong partnerships with both national and international research organizations.

The DRDO Industry Academia – Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) is pivotal in fostering collaboration between academic institutions and national defence research forays. This project highlights the university’s research prowess, expected to elevate its status within the national research landscape and create avenues for scholars and budding researchers to engage in advanced scientific projects.

In recognition of this significant achievement, Thiru R Durgashankar, a Member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee, along with Prof. Dr. R Rajavel, Registrar at Bharathiar University, conveyed their congratulations to the research team for securing this prestigious grant from the DRDO. They acknowledged the dedicated efforts of Dr. N Jayakumar, Dr. S Suja, and their team, remarking that such achievements bolster the academic and research standing of Bharathiar University nationally. They expressed confidence in the project’s potential to catalyze scientific innovation and enhance India’s research frameworks in domains of defence, toxicology, and public health.
