Matthew Hayden, a former opener for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has expressed his support for Dinesh Karthik to take over as the franchise’s head coach following Stephen Fleming’s departure. He believes that Karthik’s roots in Tamil Nadu would provide a significant advantage in this role. Fleming ended his long association with CSK in 2026 after accepting the head coach position with the England cricket team, prompting the five-time IPL champions to seek a new leader.

In a recent discussion on the Wisden Cricket podcast, Hayden stated, “I feel like Dinesh Karthik would be a really good choice for CSK. He has been under the tutelage of world-class coaches, including Andy Flower, who have enjoyed successful careers both as players and coaches.” He highlighted that Karthik’s local ties could bring an essential element to the team.

Karthik’s Coaching Experience

Dinesh Karthik, who retired from international cricket in 2024, is beginning to establish his coaching credentials. He joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as their batting coach and mentor ahead of the 2025 IPL season, working alongside Andy Flower, who was the franchise’s head coach during that period. This experience is likely to inform his approach if he assumes the head coach position at CSK.

Hayden noted the challenges that overseas coaches face in the IPL, particularly with communication barriers that may arise with younger players. He stated, “CSK notoriously picks from afar. There have been very few players from Tamil Nadu who have been part of the squad. They mostly play elsewhere.” By bringing in someone like Karthik, Hayden believes CSK could find a smooth pathway to communicate effectively with their players.

Hayden further emphasised the difficulties foreign coaches encounter, especially when dealing with younger, less experienced players in the league. He explained that a local coach could significantly ease these communication challenges, “It’s very difficult to be a foreign coach in the IPL. There are natural language barriers that can make interaction frustrating, especially for the next level of players.”

CSK’s Transition Period

The CSK are entering a transformative phase after a disappointing performance in IPL 2025. Following their fifth title win in 2023, the team finished eighth in the points table in 2025, failing to qualify for the playoffs. This decline has prompted discussions regarding the franchise’s future direction, with the appointment of Fleming’s successor being critical in preparing for the upcoming season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s team endured a challenging season, compounded by the absence of MS Dhoni, who did not participate in any matches. As CSK works towards rebuilding and strategising for a successful future, identifying the right coach will play a vital role. Hayden’s comments come alongside insights from former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has also mentioned Eoin Morgan as a potential candidate for the coaching vacancy.

In a recent episode of his YouTube show “Ash Ki Baat,” Ashwin discussed the potential for Morgan to take on the coaching role at CSK. He stated, “I have a feeling Eoin Morgan might be coming. His name is doing the rounds strongly. Early discussions are on, no doubt.” The comments suggest ongoing talks about who will lead the team moving forward.
