Samajwadi MP Claims House Arrest

Following the demolition, Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan reported that she was placed under house arrest at her residence in Kairana. The MP, who represents the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency, stated that a large police contingent was deployed at her home as she intended to travel to Saharanpur. The MP aimed to engage with officials regarding the demolition and address the concerns of her constituents. Hasan expressed her frustration, questioning whether it was a crime for an elected representative to advocate on behalf of her constituents.

Hasan emphasised the importance of public representation in a democracy, asserting that efforts to suppress her voice are a disservice to the people she represents. She indicated that her attempt to raise awareness about the mosque’s demolition was hindered by the authorities, which she viewed as a blatant disregard for democratic principles.

Context of the Demolition

The mosque’s demolition stemmed from a complaint filed by Vikas Tyagi, a former provincial coordinator of the Bajrang Dal. Tyagi alleged that the mosque had been constructed illegally within the DM office complex and that the premises were being utilised for commercial activities, such as renting out rooms to outsiders and operating a post office. Following these allegations, City Magistrate Kuldeep Singh ordered the immediate demolition of the mosque, citing security concerns regarding the use of government property.

Local administration officials argued that the encroachment compromised the confidentiality and security of the government office situated within the complex.
