The community of Kuhestak, a small coastal town in southern Iran, faced unimaginable devastation following a US military strike that interrupted a wedding celebration. Eyewitnesses detailed the chaos, with shoes scattered across the ground and injured children among the casualties. Reports state that at least five people, including one child, lost their lives and over 60 others sustained injuries during the incident.

Local resident Suleiman Zakiri Fard recounted horrifying scenes filled with dust and smoke, where people were seen emerging covered in blood. He claimed to have witnessed two drone strikes targeting the wedding gathering that had commenced after a missile hit a nearby telecommunications tower.

The wedding ceremony, which had yet to start, drew many women and children to a family compound, preparing for a joyful occasion that quickly transformed into a site of ruin and despair.

Local Response to the Aftermath

Sasan Zarei, a vendor aged 34, described the aftermath as devastating. He arrived at the scene shortly after hearing the explosions and joined locals in searching for survivors amid the rubble. Zarei mentioned that many of the injured were children, some suffering grave injuries, including a severe chest wound.

Describing the devastation, Zarei noted, “The scenes were very heartbreaking,” as he recounted the scattered shoes and heartbreaking injuries. He vehemently rejected claims that the area was a military target, alleging that the strike affected innocent civilians instead.

The event has prompted scrutiny regarding whether the US military’s actions were justified and whether a US munition directly caused the casualties at the wedding gathering.

US Investigates Incident Amid Rising Tensions

While the US has not claimed responsibility for the incident, an investigation is reportedly being conducted. An analysis conducted by Reuters, involving verified images and expert opinions, indicates that the blast likely resulted from a direct hit by a US missile rather than an errant Iranian air-defence missile.

Experts consulted noted that the wedding location was approximately 135 metres from the telecommunications tower that was targeted and pointed toward the type of munition identified at the scene as belonging to the US military.

US Vice President JD Vance stated that the situation is under comprehensive review, while Captain Tim Hawkins of US Central Command remarked that investigations into the reports of the strike are ongoing. There has been no confirmation of a formal investigative process as updates on military operations continue to evolve.

The strike took place during escalating tensions between the US and Iran, a period marked by missile and drone exchanges. The incident, which has revived discussions about civilian casualties in this ongoing conflict, comes amid concerns regarding regional stability and security in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Kuhestak, like many towns along the southern coastline, now bears the scars of political strife affecting its residents.
