West Bengal Health Minister Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee has called for a temporary change in school uniforms to better protect students during the dengue season. During a high-level review meeting at Swasthya Bhavan, he urged educational institutions across the state to implement modifications that ensure children’s arms and legs are covered. This initiative comes as West Bengal faces a surge in dengue cases during the peak transmission period.

Dr Mukherjee specifically requested that schools permit girls who typically wear skirts to adopt salwar suits for the next three months. He emphasised the need for full-sleeved shirts and full-length trousers to reduce exposure to mosquito bites. “We can completely prevent dengue afterward. Awareness is required,” he stated, appealing to teachers and school authorities to facilitate these changes.

In his address, he urged, “Please do not send girls to school wearing skirts. Allow them to wear salwar suits that cover their legs.” The minister further dismissed suggestions of using knee-high socks as sufficient protection, explaining that they may not effectively shield against mosquito bites.

Guidelines for Schools to Implement Changes

The state government is preparing to release an administrative circular that outlines these temporary guidelines specifically for government-run schools. Private institutions will also be encouraged to adopt similar protective measures, while the final decision regarding uniform changes will rest with individual school managements.

This initiative arises amid the seasonal increase in mosquito-borne illnesses, particularly as the monsoon impacts the region. Health officials are concentrating on preventive strategies aimed at school-going children, who often spend significant time outdoors, increasing their vulnerability to mosquito exposure.

Dr Mukherjee underscored that prevention and awareness are critical alongside ongoing dengue-control initiatives. He highlighted the issues surrounding delayed medical treatment, which can lead to severe health outcomes. The minister urged citizens to remain vigilant for symptoms and seek prompt medical assistance if needed.

Focus on Reducing Dengue Cases This Spring

With the months of September, October, and November identified as crucial for dengue prevention, Mukherjee has appealed to all educators to support these efforts. “Let’s try and see if we can reduce dengue cases,” he expressed, emphasising a collective responsibility in addressing this health concern.

The proposed uniform changes are designed to limit exposed skin during the critical dengue season, aligning with the state’s larger vector-control strategies. Awareness campaigns will accompany these measures to enhance understanding of dengue prevention among students and parents.

As the West Bengal government works to mitigate the impacts of this mosquito-borne disease, these uniform adjustments aim to promote greater health safety among school communities. By fostering a proactive approach, the administration hopes to decrease the incidence of dengue during these high-risk months.
