Bhaderwah Foxglove Bloom Attracts Eco-Tourists to Jammu and Kashmir Valley

The CSR Journal Magazine

Vast fields of white, pink, and purple foxglove flowers are attracting eco-tourists to Bhaderwah valley in Jammu and Kashmir, where this European species is thriving amid the Himalayan landscape. The appearance of these blossoms has prompted local residents and tourism stakeholders to advocate for Bhaderwah as a unique floral destination.

Officials have reported that digitalis purpurea, commonly referred to as foxglove and native to Europe and some Mediterranean regions, has flourished across expansive patches of high-altitude meadows and slopes in Bhaderwah. The flowers are prominently visible in the Jaie Valley, Guldanda, Thanthera, Hanga, Padri, Bhal Padri, Khanni Top and Bach Dhar, as well as along parts of the Bhaderwah-Pathankot and Bhaderwah-Chamba inter-state highways.

Tourists have shared their awe after encountering the blooms. Akshay Paul, a visitor from Maharashtra, expressed surprise at the sight of foxglove adorning both sides of the nearly 35-kilometre stretch from Basti to Chattergalla. He remarked on how this experience had become a memorable highlight of their trip.

Visitor Experiences Highlight Floral Beauty

Flower enthusiast Kavita from Nagpur travelled to Bhaderwah specifically in search of the foxglove blossoms after discovering their presence online. She stated, “I came here especially to see foxglove after learning that Bhaderwah is among the few places in India where these flowers grow in such abundance.” Kavita noted the striking beauty of the flowers and suggested that the area has the potential to attract more flower lovers.

Another visitor, Simriti Sharma, described her encounter with the flowers as “a fairy tale.” She mentioned that with effective promotion, Bhaderwah could emerge as a notable attraction within Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector.

Operators of adventure tourism have urged local authorities to leverage this natural phenomenon and promote Bhaderwah as a seasonal floral tourism destination. Vikas Sharma, a tour organiser from Bhaderwah, highlighted that an increasing number of visitors are seeking out the blooms in the Jaie Valley and surrounding meadows.

Local Stakeholders Advocate for Tourism Development

Sharma commented on the growing interest in the foxglove flowers, noting that some tourists choose to extend their stays to explore the blooming landscapes. He remarked on the lack of promotional efforts for this natural attraction, emphasising that while other regions invest resources into seasonal flower tourism, Bhaderwah possesses naturally occurring foxglove stretches that bloom for nearly three months each year, from April through June.

Bhaderwah Development Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Sanjeev Sharma, shared insights suggesting that foxglove seeds may have been introduced to the valley by European travellers in the early 19th century. This historical connection could explain the plentiful growth of these flowers today, enhancing the beauty of the area.

Sharma indicated that the administration is eager to attract more visitors by promoting this floral spectacle, planning to organise a Foxglove Festival by the end of the month. With the vibrant flowers now in full bloom throughout Bhaderwah, the interest from tourists is increasing, while local stakeholders and authorities seek to transform this seasonal event into a significant tourism draw.
