Battle for Bhowanipur Intensifies: Suvendu Adhikari Hits the Ground, Warns Police Against ‘Intimidation’

The CSR Journal Magazine

The political temperature in the high-profile Bhowanipur constituency reached a boiling point on Thursday as Leader of Opposition and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari officially launched his election campaign. In a direct challenge to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Adhikari kicked off his trail in Ward 70 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, signaling the start of what is expected to be the most watched contest of the 2026 Assembly Elections.

Grassroots Outreach and Minor Tensions

Flanked by senior BJP leader Tapas Roy and South Kolkata District President Anupam Bhattacharya, Adhikari spent the morning navigating the markets of the Chakraberia area. The BJP candidate was seen interacting closely with local shopkeepers and residents, inquiring about civic grievances and allegations of local “high-handedness” by ruling party activists.

While supporters greeted Adhikari with traditional tilaks and flower garlands amidst the beating of dhaks, the atmosphere turned briefly tense when a group of TMC workers countered with slogans of “Jai Bangla” and “Mamata Banerjee Zindabad.” However, a quick intervention by the police prevented the situation from escalating into a physical confrontation.

Parting Shot at the Police Station

The highlight of the day was Adhikari’s unannounced visit to the Bhowanipur Police Station. Following a meeting with booth and ward presidents at his newly inaugurated election office, Adhikari alleged that BJP workers were receiving threatening calls from anonymous numbers linked to the local police.

“BJP workers are being warned of false cases if they participate in electioneering,” Adhikari claimed.

Inside the station, the BJP candidate reportedly issued a stern warning to police officials. He alleged that the harassment was being orchestrated at the behest of the Chief Minister and top police welfare officials. Adhikari reminded the personnel that they would be held accountable for any bias, especially in the wake of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) ongoing crackdown on the state administration.

Context: The Administrative Reshuffle

This confrontation comes at a sensitive time. Since Sunday midnight, the ECI has initiated a massive “cleansing” of the state’s bureaucracy and police top brass, removing several high-ranking officers and barring them from any poll-related duties. Adhikari’s “warning” to the local police is seen as a strategic move to embolden his party workers and capitalize on the current administrative flux caused by the ECI’s intervention.

With Adhikari setting up his base in Chakraberia and Mamata Banerjee’s team already active on the ground, Bhowanipur has officially transformed into a 24/7 political battlefield.
