Horrific Fire At Bangladesh Beach Resort Claims 10 Lives, 6 Of A Family

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic fire incident occurred at Tuptup Resto and Resort in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh, resulting in the deaths of at least ten individuals, including six members of a single family. The fire broke out on Saturday, October 17, 2026, around 7.25 am local time, leading to the destruction of the three-storey resort, which was primarily constructed from bamboo and wood.

According to reports, the resort did not possess a fire-safety licence and had previously been warned about safety violations following an inspection conducted in June. The blaze reportedly engulfed the building swiftly, raising concerns about fire safety regulations at such establishments.

Emergency services responded promptly, with nine injured individuals transported to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for treatment. Among them, five patients remain under care due to burns covering approximately five per cent of their bodies, while four others have since been discharged.

Survivor’s Account and Victim Identification

Ashiqul Islam, a holidaymaker at the resort, managed to escape by jumping from the second floor. Tragically, he lost his wife, Israt Jahan Maliha, along with five other family members in the incident. The deceased have been identified as Maliha, aged 30; Milita Mehezabien Alvi, 23; Laila Jahan Nabila, 27; Nafista Meem, 27; Fariha Kabir, 33; and five-year-old Faizan Ahmed.

The identities of the remaining four victims have yet to be confirmed. The Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters officially confirmed the recovery of ten bodies from the scene. Local media outlets have reported that approximately 30 individuals were present at the resort when the fire erupted. Out of them, only four or five managed to escape.

The status and whereabouts of the remaining guests remain uncertain. Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner A Mannan stated that an investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. Initial suspicions suggest that the fire may have originated in the kitchen. However, definitive conclusions will only be drawn once the investigation is complete.

Concerns Over Fire Safety Regulations

The incident has raised significant concerns regarding fire safety regulations in Bangladesh, particularly in tourist areas. Sultanul Afreen Junaid, Director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, highlighted that the resort had been warned about its lack of a fire-safety licence. This tragic event underscores the importance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent such disasters in the future.

Local authorities are expected to review safety measures across similar establishments to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations. The incident has prompted calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards in the hospitality sector, particularly in regions frequented by tourists.

As the investigation continues, the local community and authorities are mourning the loss of lives. They reflect on the need for enhanced safety measures to protect guests and residents alike from such catastrophic events.
