Australian Foreign Minister Meets PM Modi to Strengthen India-Australia Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in New Delhi to discuss the evolving Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Australia. PM Modi indicated a commitment to further cooperation in various sectors including defence, trade, and technology, aiming to enhance supply chain resilience.

In a post on X, PM Modi expressed optimism about the bilateral collaboration, stating, “India and Australia will continue to work for a free, open, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific.” This meeting underscores the mutual interest in strengthening ties to address regional challenges.

Wong, who was participating in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting, emphasized that ongoing efforts within the Quad are focused on generating actionable outcomes amid changing strategic circumstances in the Indo-Pacific region. She highlighted that the grouping’s initiatives aim to mitigate economic stress affecting the region.

Quad Initiatives for Regional Cooperation

During the discussions, Wong presented various initiatives led by the Quad aimed at enhancing regional stability. She mentioned strong commitments to the Pacific through the Quad Ports of the Future Partnership, which is set to launch a pilot project for port infrastructure in Fiji.

Wong elaborated on the need for a transparent and secure maritime domain in the Indo-Pacific, indicating that the Quad nations are working to coordinate maritime surveillance efforts, especially in the Indian Ocean. This collaboration is facilitated through the Indo-Pacific Maritime Surveillance Collaboration Initiative, which aims to provide partners with near-real-time satellite tracking data.

Furthermore, Wong addressed the importance of collective measures against illegal fishing and human trafficking, reiterating the commitment to strengthening cooperative law enforcement and cyber capabilities across the region.

Future Engagements and Economic Collaboration

In a media interaction following the meeting, Wong noted that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that PM Modi would visit Australia soon. Wong expressed enthusiasm for the forthcoming visit, highlighting the potential to further solidify bilateral ties.

The Australian Foreign Minister affirmed the depth of relations between India and Australia, stating that both nations share a vision for a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific. She acknowledged the strategic alignment and increasing economic partnership, particularly given India’s status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Wong concluded by emphasizing the significance of the India-Australia relationship, which is marked by comprehensive strategic collaboration. She stated, “As we seek to diversify supply chains and enhance our economies, this partnership is expected to flourish even further.”
