In a significant effort to support children’s health, Assam’s National Health Mission (NHM) has organised treatment for 76 children diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). This initiative coincides with the celebration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 76th birthday, underscoring the commitment of the Assam government to address critical healthcare needs.

Dr Babul Bezbaruah, Principal and Chief Superintendent of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), announced the initiative during a press conference. He mentioned that the Assamese government will facilitate these patients’ treatment at renowned healthcare facilities, including Narayana Health in Bengaluru and hospitals in Mumbai. He emphasised that this step is part of a broader effort to ensure that children in need receive medical attention.

Bezbaruah stated, “On behalf of the Assam government, we are sending 76 CHD patients to various medical institutions across the nation today. It’s a significant gesture to commemorate the Prime Minister’s birthday.” He also highlighted that this programme has been ongoing since July 1, 2010, resulting in thousands of children receiving treatment at no cost.

Long-Standing Programme Sees Successful Outcomes

The programme initiated on July 1, 2010, has so far facilitated the treatment of a total of 14,726 patients suffering from CHD. Dr Bezbaruah noted that this initiative has consistently provided free medical assistance and returned children to their families after recovery. “This programme will continue beyond today, but we are particularly celebrating this occasion by sending our children for treatment,” he added.

Dr Devajit Choudhury, Superintendent of GMCH, reaffirmed the significance of this initiative. He explained that on this special occasion, 76 identified patients are being sent for treatment as part of the designated Congenital Heart Disease programme. He stressed the importance of this step in ensuring better healthcare access for affected children.

Dr Choudhury discussed the programme’s success, stating that over 14,500 patients have benefited since its inception. He noted that more than 2,015 batches have been sent from GMCH for treatment. The initiative aims to provide comprehensive support to each patient, including transportation and accommodation for their guardians, all funded by the Assam government.

Dr Choudhury expressed appreciation for the leadership of the Chief Minister and Prime Minister Modi in facilitating this initiative, recognising their roles in its conceptualisation and implementation. He stated, “We must convey our gratitude to our honourable Chief Minister and also acknowledge Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting such initiatives aimed at children with cardiac issues.”

The Assam government’s commitment to children’s healthcare reflects its broader vision to tackle critical health challenges within the state. This initiative signposts a continuing obligation to ensure that vulnerable populations receive necessary medical support.

As an ongoing programme, the NHM’s efforts will pave the way for further advancements in healthcare, providing much-needed treatment for children with serious health conditions. The initiative not only highlights the role of government healthcare but also the importance of collaboration in improving the health outcomes of young patients.
