Assam police seize 90,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs 27 crore in Cachar, Two arrested

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, Assam Police on Tuesday night seized 90,000 Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 27 crore in Cachar district and arrested two persons in connection with the case.

The arrested accused have been identified as Dalim Uddin Laskar and Abed Sultan Barbhuiya, both residents of Dholai in Cachar.

The seizure was made at Rongpur after police intercepted a truck suspected of transporting contraband from Champhai district in neighbouring Mizoram to Guwahati.

According to a police officer, the operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs about the movement of a large consignment of banned narcotics. Police teams were deployed at strategic points, leading to the interception of the vehicle.

“A thorough search of the truck resulted in the recovery of the Yaba tablets from a concealed compartment,” the officer said.

Yaba, commonly referred to as “crazy medicine” in Thai, is a synthetic drug containing methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant. The drug has emerged as a major concern in the Northeast due to its easy cross-border movement and growing abuse.

Chief Minister lauds police action

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the Cachar Police for the successful operation. Taking to social media platform X, he wrote: “YABA tablets worth Rs 27 crore – now history! In an excellent anti-narcotics operation by @cacharpolice in Rongpur, a vehicle coming from a neighbouring state was intercepted, leading to the seizure of 90,000 Yaba tablets and the arrest of two persons.”

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to identify and dismantle the wider drug trafficking network involved in the operation.

Seperate operation yields 86 kg opium in Kamrup

In a separate anti-narcotics operation on Sunday, Assam Police arrested seven persons and seized 86 kg of opium during a raid at a residential house in Udiana village of Kamrup district.

Police said the raid was also conducted based on specific intelligence inputs. The house owner, who was among those arrested, had reportedly been booked earlier in a similar narcotics case.

Police officials confirmed that investigations in both cases are ongoing as part of Assam’s intensified drive against drug trafficking, aimed at breaking supply chains and curbing the spread of narcotics across the state.
