Assam Government Issues Helpline Numbers for Stranded Individuals in Meghalaya

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Assam government has announced helpline numbers to aid residents who may find themselves stranded in Meghalaya following the violence that occurred on August 19 in the Khanapara region along the Assam-Meghalaya border. The announcement was made on August 21, 2026, in response to incidents that unfolded during a protest organised by the Khasi Students’ Union. This protest turned violent and resulted in damage to several vehicles, including those registered in Assam.

In the wake of the unrest, Assam Police took proactive measures to address the situation. They encouraged family members or anyone with information about individuals or vehicles stranded in Meghalaya to contact the designated helpline numbers. This initiative aims to facilitate the swift sharing of information with the local administration and police in Meghalaya for urgent support and coordination.

Violence During Protest Rally

The violent confrontations reportedly began during a black flag bike rally held in Shillong, organised by the Khasi Students’ Union. The rally was intended to draw attention to a five-point charter of demands, including calls for the enforcement of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act as well as revisions in the recruitment process via the Meghalaya Public Service Commission. Unfortunately, elements allegedly with ulterior motives infiltrated the rally, leading to an escalation of tensions and disruptions. As a result, many participants and passersby found themselves in unsafe situations.

Following the incidents, several drivers of Assam-registered vehicles gathered in Guwahati on August 20 to stage protests at the Khanapara area, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in light of the violence. These events prompted immediate attention from both the Assam government and police forces, who were keen to ensure the safety of their citizens in the neighbouring state.

To assist with the developing situation, the helpline numbers provided by the Assam government are a WhatsApp number at 9181014888 and a landline number at 03612381511. The authorities have emphasised the importance of using these numbers to facilitate communication between affected individuals and those providing assistance on the ground.

Collaborative Efforts for Peace and Normalcy

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his concern about the unrest in Shillong in a conversation with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. In a message posted on X, CM Sarma revealed that he had instructed Assam’s Border Protection Minister Atul Bora to work closely with Meghalaya authorities to help restore peace and order in the region. Collaborative efforts and communication between the two state governments are crucial in tackling the aftermath of this unrest.

In a related development, Meghalaya police have taken action against key leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union by arresting three prominent figures involved in the protest. These arrests come amidst claims from the KSU that individuals with negative intentions had joined the rally, seeking to undermine its objectives. The situation remains dynamic as authorities navigate the challenges arising from these events.

As the Assam government continues to coordinate with Meghalaya’s local administration for the safety of affected individuals, the emphasis remains on restoring normalcy in the region. The helplines provided are just one aspect of the broader efforts to ensure public safety and maintain the peace that both states are committed to upholding.
