The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has announced that Indian boxers who secure medals at the 2026 Asian Games will gain direct qualification for the 2027 World Boxing Championships. This championships will serve as the inaugural qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The BFI outlined this new selection framework on September 16, 2026. It aims to optimise India’s representation at the forthcoming Olympic Games. The qualification process aligns with the guidelines established by World Boxing and ratified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Details of the Qualification Process

The selection framework comprises four stages, intended to facilitate the highest number of Indian athletes at the Los Angeles Games. The qualifying journey will commence with the 2027 World Boxing Championships. It is followed by the Asian Qualifier in China and two additional World Qualifying Tournaments. These are scheduled for Italy and Hungary in 2028.

“In their respective weight categories, Asian Games 2026 medallists will be regarded as the primary entries. Gold medallists of the 10th Elite National Championships will serve as reserve entries within those categories,” the BFI circular stated. This approach ensures that if India does not secure an Asian Games medal in a weight category, the gold medallist from the national championships will be positioned as the main entrant.

The regulations extend further to Olympic weight categories not represented at the Asian Games. Additionally, boxers reaching the quota bout stage at the World Championships, without achieving Olympic quotas, will be allowed direct access to the Asian Qualifiers. Remaining places will be allocated through ranking-based selection trials involving national camp members.

Role of the National Coaching Camp

To qualify for these trials, boxers must first gain entry into the national coaching camp via designated qualification routes. The same selection methodology will also determine India’s representatives for the two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028. BFI President Ajay Singh emphasised that this policy is structured to provide boxers with a clear pathway to the 2028 Olympics. It is based on consistent performance in both national coaching scenarios and World Boxing qualification events.

The national coaching camp is set to initially include medal recipients from the 10th Elite National Championships, Asian Games medallists, and any wild-card selections deemed appropriate by the BFI’s selection committee. For weight categories not part of the Olympic programme, the national champion will serve as India’s lead entry for the 2027 World Championships. Moreover, the silver medallist will be positioned as the reserve option.

This comprehensive approach reflects the BFI’s commitment to systematically enhancing the quality and performance of Indian boxers on the international stage. By establishing a robust qualification system, the federation aims to bolster its athletes’ chances of success leading into one of the most significant global sports events, the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
