A cyclonic storm named Montha is brewing over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a depression by October 28, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The cyclone will affect India’s eastern coastline, bringing heavy rains and strong winds.
As per the IMD’s warning, Montha is likely to make landfall near Kakinada, a coastal city in Andhra Pradesh, on the evening of October 28.
Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on High Alert
Heavy rainfall is expected from October 27 to October 28 in regions such as Yanam and Rayalaseema. A yellow alert has been issued for the entire state, and residents have been advised to stay indoors and take necessary precautions.
Similarly, Odisha is expected to experience heavy rainfall between October 28 and 29. Alerts have been issued for Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri districts.
Wind speeds may reach 60–70 km/h, with gusts up to 80 km/h, which could cause damage to weak structures, especially in coastal areas.

Tamil Nadu to Experience Heavy Rainfall
Intermittent showers have already begun in Tamil Nadu ahead of the cyclone. Districts such as Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram have started receiving rainfall, with thunderstorms in some areas.
By tonight, showers are expected to intensify in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Puducherry, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet.
According to the IMD, by October 27, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Vellore are likely to receive heavy rainfall, which will ease by October 28.
