A shift in weather patterns is on the horizon for large areas of North and Northwest India due to the arrival of strong northwesterly winds. This change is predicted to bring a temporary cessation of monsoon rain activity and clearer skies across several states. Recent satellite imagery highlights widespread clear conditions, indicating a significant transformation from the recent monsoon activity.

Despite the monsoon axis, an essential component for rainfall in the northern regions, remaining positioned towards the Himalayan foothills, isolated and intense rainfall has still occurred. An example is Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, which recorded an impressive 381 mm of rain within the 24-hour period concluding at 8:30 am, surpassing its historical monthly rainfall record.

However, forecasts now indicate a marked change in this weather pattern as strong northwesterly winds are expected to sweep into North India starting September 7, 2026. This shift will usher in drier air, substantially diminishing rainfall across a vast area.

Dry and Clear Conditions Predicted for Several States

The impending weather shift is likely to lead to near-dry and predominantly clear conditions in key regions, including Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and portions of northwest Uttar Pradesh. These areas can expect a reprieve from the persistent rains that characterise the active phase of the monsoon season.

With the arrival of the dry northwesterly winds, a pronounced increase in daytime temperatures is anticipated, contributing to hotter weather, even as September signifies the latter stages of the southwest monsoon season. Satellite feedback confirms minimal cloud development across many areas in western and central India.

In contrast, more organised cloud formations appear to remain concentrated over the eastern and northeastern parts of the country, suggesting regional variations in weather patterns.

Potential For Further Rainfall Following Weather Reset

While North India prepares for a brief pause in monsoon activity, meteorological predictions indicate that the season may not conclude just yet. Weather models suggest the potential development of a new low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which could impact weather across Eastern, Central, and Northern India between September 12 and September 18.

If the low-pressure system materialises as anticipated, it might initiate another wave of widespread rainfall, possibly constituting one of the final significant pushes of the monsoon season in the northern states. Such developments will be closely monitored to understand their impact on overall weather patterns.

For now, North India seems poised for a temporary weather reset, with rain clouds making way for clear blue skies, bright sunshine, and strengthening dry winds. This upcoming transition marks an interesting phase in the ongoing weather dynamics as the region heads toward the conclusion of the monsoon season.
