Leaders of all parties involved in the INDIA bloc are set to convene in Delhi on September 30 for an important gathering. This meeting is expected to lead to significant decisions regarding Gyanesh Kumar, especially following the recent removal of over 13 crore names from the SIR and the resulting uncertainties within the Election Commission. High-profile figures, including Mamata Banerjee and Uddhav Thackeray, are anticipated to strategise against both Kumar and the central government.

Akhilesh Yadav’s Absence Raises Questions

Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, has publicly announced his decision to skip the meeting and has designated another party member to represent him. This absence has sparked speculation regarding his intentions, particularly amidst ongoing talks related to seat-sharing with the Congress. Insiders suggest that Yadav aims to avoid a direct encounter with top Congress leaders, as such a meeting may inevitably lead to discussions about their ongoing disagreements.

The Congress party has been vocal in its demands for clarity on the number of seats to be contested in the upcoming elections. It believes that delays in this matter could adversely affect its prospect of securing a stable alliance. However, Yadav seems intent on postponing discussions about seat-sharing for the time being, indicating a reluctance to formalise any agreements with the Congress until he feels it is strategically beneficial.

There are reports indicating that Yadav has recently communicated with Mallikarjun Kharge, adding another layer of complexity to the negotiations. While speculation persists about a potential meeting between Yadav and Kharge in early October, Yadav appears cautious and preferring to sidestep seat-sharing dialogues for now. His strategy seemingly emphasises delaying these discussions as long as possible.

Congress Pressure on Samajwadi Party Intensifies

As negotiations progress, the Congress party continues to apply pressure on the Samajwadi Party concerning seat-sharing. Prominent Congress members, including Imran Masood, are active in advocating for commitment from the SP on this issue. Yadav has expressed a sentiment that while there may be public disagreements between the SP and Congress, internally, they maintain a level of unity similar to that of the BJP and its allies.

Yadav’s position is that the Congress should first identify viable candidates and the constituencies where it possesses a strong organisational presence. Only after this should discussions on seat-sharing commence. The Congress has countered this by asserting that if discussions on seat distribution extend over the next month or two, it risks losing the capacity to negotiate effectively with other parties, potentially leaving Yadav to dictate the terms later.

This emerging dynamic suggests that both parties are operating under different timelines and priorities regarding the alliance and seat-sharing. Yadav is advocating for terms favourable to the Samajwadi Party, whereas the Congress is increasingly anxious to conclude agreements in their favour. The disparities in expectations create further challenges in reconciling their positions for an eventual alliance.
