After Wife’s Suicide, Bengaluru Man Travels 1,000 Km, Found Dead in Nagpur Hotel

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a tragic turn of events, a Bengaluru man accused of abetting his wife’s suicide was found dead in a hotel room in Nagpur, Maharashtra, late Friday night. The deceased, Suraj Shivanna, a 30-year-old franchise owner of an online delivery service, allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. Shockingly, his 60-year-old mother also attempted to take her life after discovering his body but survived.

Family fled Bengaluru fearing threats

According to police, Suraj and his family had left Bengaluru on December 25 after facing alleged threats following the death of his wife, Ganavi. The family travelled nearly 1,000 km, stopping briefly in Hyderabad before reaching Nagpur on December 26. They checked into a hotel on Wardha Road around 9.30 pm. Suraj was found hanging around 12.30 am by his mother, Jayanti Shivanna.

Overcome with grief, Jayanti reportedly attempted suicide in the same room. She survived after the noose snapped, and her cries alerted hotel staff and other family members. She was rushed to hospital and is currently stated to be out of danger.

Background of dowry harassment case

Suraj had been named in an FIR for dowry harassment and abetment of suicide following the death of his wife Ganavi, an MBA graduate, who allegedly died by suicide on December 22 in Bengaluru’s Vidyaranyapura area, barely six weeks after their marriage on October 29. Ganavi’s family accused Suraj and his relatives of subjecting her to mental and physical harassment.

However, Suraj’s brother Sanjay Shivanna denied the allegations, claiming the family never demanded dowry and had borne all wedding expenses. He told police that around 30 people had stormed their Bengaluru home after the case was registered, forcing them to flee in fear.

Marriage troubles and mounting pressure

Family sources said Ganavi was initially reluctant to marry and was allegedly pressured into the union. The couple’s honeymoon to Sri Lanka reportedly ended abruptly following disputes, after which Ganavi returned to her parental home and later died by suicide. Attempts at mediation by family members had failed.

Police probe underway

Nagpur’s Sonegaon police have registered a case of accidental death for now and are coordinating with Bengaluru police regarding the dowry harassment and abetment case. Suraj’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is ongoing.
