The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) has announced significant revisions to the question paper format for students in Classes 9 to 12. This change will take effect from the 2026-27 academic session, as detailed in a notice released on October 15, 2026. One of the most notable alterations is the elimination of internal choices in two-mark very short-answer questions for main subjects. Students will now be required to answer the questions as set by the board without the option of alternative questions.
While internal choices will be removed for two-mark questions, the board has confirmed that these choices will still be available for three-mark short-answer and four-mark long-answer questions. This means that students will retain some flexibility in answering questions that carry higher marks, allowing them to choose between different questions within those categories.
The decision to revise the question paper pattern was made following a meeting of the Board of Secondary Education’s Curriculum Committee on August 20, 2025. The proposed changes were subsequently approved during the Executive Committee meeting held on August 28, 2025. The board aims to enhance the assessment process while ensuring that students are adequately prepared for their examinations.
Introduction of Internal Choices in NSQF Subjects
In addition to the changes in main subjects, the MPBSE has introduced internal choices for five-mark long-answer and seven-mark essay-type questions in subjects governed by the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). This new provision allows students studying these subjects to have options when answering questions that carry higher marks, thereby providing them with greater flexibility in their responses.
The inclusion of internal choices in NSQF subjects represents a significant shift in the question paper format. Students will now be able to select from alternative questions for higher-mark queries, which is expected to enhance their ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in these areas. The board’s decision reflects its commitment to adapting the curriculum to better meet the needs of students and the evolving educational landscape.
Students enrolled in NSQF subjects should take note of these changes as they prepare for the upcoming examinations. The introduction of internal choices is intended to support their learning experience and provide them with opportunities to showcase their skills effectively.
Implications for Students Preparing for Examinations
As the 2026-27 academic session approaches, it is crucial for students in Classes 9 to 12 to familiarise themselves with the revised question paper pattern. The removal of internal choices in two-mark questions for main subjects necessitates a focused approach to preparation, as students will need to ensure they are well-versed in all topics covered in the syllabus.
Students are encouraged to consult the official MPBSE notice for detailed information on the changes and to adjust their study strategies accordingly. Understanding the new format will be essential for effective exam preparation, particularly in light of the changes to internal choices.
The board’s revisions aim to create a more structured examination process that aligns with educational standards. By preparing adequately for these changes, students can enhance their performance and achieve their academic goals in the forthcoming examinations.
