The University of Manchester has revealed its intention to establish a new centre in Bengaluru, aimed at enhancing its collaboration with Indian students, businesses, and researchers. This announcement occurred on October 15 during the inaugural Great North Mayoral Mission to India, which gathered universities, businesses, and civic leaders from northern England to strengthen ties with India.

The proposed centre will provide the university with a permanent presence in Bengaluru, facilitating the development of new partnerships in education, research, and innovation. Bengaluru was selected due to its robust network of universities, research institutes, and technology firms.

Centre to Enhance Student Industry Experience

The new centre will build upon the university’s Partner-Enabled Learning model, which integrates real-world work experiences into degree programmes. This initiative aims to offer students opportunities for internships, work placements, and projects that are closely linked to industry needs.

Through this model, students will be able to cultivate practical skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability, complementing their academic studies. The university has existing connections with major Indian companies, including Reliance, Tata, and Infosys, and intends to expand these relationships to create additional opportunities for both students and researchers.

By fostering these connections, the university aims to enhance the employability of its graduates and contribute to the local economy through collaborative projects and research initiatives.

Bengaluru: A Strategic Location for Educational Collaboration

Bengaluru is recognised as a hub for leading educational and research institutions, as well as significant technology companies. Many of these entities already collaborate with the university’s academics and utilise its graduates. The announcement of the new centre was made at an event held at Science Gallery Bengaluru, attended by Greater Manchester Mayor Bev Craig, university leaders, alumni, and representatives from various sectors.

Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, highlighted the university’s established connections with India in education, business, and culture. He expressed enthusiasm about the new centre, stating that it will play a pivotal role in deepening these relationships and fostering mutual learning over the coming years.

This initiative aligns with the university’s broader strategy, From Manchester for the World, which seeks to expand its international partnerships. The university has been actively collaborating with Indian institutions on research and doctoral programmes, including a joint PhD programme launched in 2021 with the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, marking a significant milestone as the first UK university to establish such a programme with an Indian institution.

Expanding Partnerships with Indian Institutions

In addition to its collaboration with IIT Kharagpur, the University of Manchester has formed partnerships with several other prominent Indian institutions, including the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru, Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education. These collaborations are expected to facilitate further research opportunities and academic exchanges.

The establishment of the new centre in Bengaluru represents a significant step in the university’s ongoing commitment to fostering international educational partnerships. By leveraging the strengths of Bengaluru’s educational and technological landscape, the university aims to enhance its global outreach and impact.

As the centre develops, it is anticipated that it will not only benefit students and researchers but also contribute to the broader educational and economic landscape of Bengaluru and India as a whole.
