The CSR Journal Magazine

A second-year student from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has reportedly died by suicide on the evening of September 18, 2026. Earlier that day, the student was discovered allegedly using a mobile phone during an examination session. The usage of the device was reportedly to upload a question paper to ChatGPT in search of answers, which raised concerns among the examination authorities.

Institution’s Response

IIT Bombay has stated that no formal disciplinary measures were initiated against the student after the incident. Following the discovery, an instructor along with the Head of the Department met with the student to discuss the matter. They provided counselling and reassured him that the situation would not negatively impact his academic record. This action was intended to alleviate any stress the student may have been experiencing.

The student then returned to his hostel room after this interaction without any reported issues. However, later that evening, he was found dead in his accommodation. The tragic nature of the situation has prompted the institution to express deep condolences, emphasising the profound impact on the student body and faculty members.

IIT Bombay has committed to providing support to the student’s friends, classmates, and all those who were affected by this unfortunate event. The administration has highlighted that the matter is under review by the appropriate authorities, seeking to understand the contributing factors surrounding the incident.

Community Reaction and Support

The death of the student has sparked widespread concern within the IIT Bombay community, prompting discussions about mental health and academic pressure faced by students. Many peers and faculty have expressed their shock and sadness, calling for increased awareness and resources to support mental well-being amongst the student population.

Support services are reportedly being made available to all students who may be struggling with similar issues, reflecting a broader need for mental health resources within educational institutions. Members of the IIT Bombay community are encouraged to utilise these services to aid their emotional and psychological health, particularly in the wake of such a tragedy.

The Institute is working on ways to reinforce the importance of mental health awareness and support structures, ensuring that students feel secure in seeking help without fear of stigma or academic repercussions. The administration is likely to evaluate existing support systems to enhance their effectiveness in addressing student needs.
