Indian Stock Market Experiences Significant Decline

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian stock market faced a considerable downturn on Monday, following a week of gains. The benchmark indices, Nifty50 and BSE Sensex, fell sharply due to heavy selling, particularly in major private banking stocks. As of approximately 1:57 PM, Nifty50 was recorded at 22,871.80, down by 274 points or 1.19 per cent, while BSE Sensex stood at 73,801.07, reflecting a decline of 928 points or 1.24 per cent. This downturn resulted in a loss of nearly Rs 4.68 lakh crore from the combined market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies, bringing it down to Rs 468 lakh crore.

V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that although the market had shown resilience due to a 2.8 per cent surge in Nifty last week and positive results from leading IT firms, escalating tensions in Hormuz and a rise in Brent crude prices to $109 could present significant challenges. He suggested that while large-cap stocks may continue to outperform mid- and small-cap stocks, the overall market sentiment is likely to remain cautious due to high crude prices.

In this context, Axis Bank emerged as the largest loser on the Sensex, with shares plummeting around 5 per cent. Other major companies such as HDFC Bank, Infosys, and Bajaj Finance also experienced declines of up to 2 per cent, while Adani Ports and Maruti Suzuki bucked the trend, gaining approximately 2 per cent.

Reasons Behind the Market Decline

The decline in the stock market was primarily driven by disappointing results from major private sector banks. Axis Bank reported a year-on-year increase of 38 per cent in standalone net profit to Rs 7,003 crore for the second quarter of FY27, yet this fell short of market expectations, leading to a drop of over 5 per cent in its shares. Similarly, HDFC Bank’s shares fell more than 2 per cent despite reporting a net profit of Rs 19,510 crore for Q2FY27, marking a 4.6 per cent increase from the previous year.

Additionally, other banks such as ICICI Bank and Yes Bank faced selling pressure, with their shares also declining by more than 1 per cent. This trend highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the banking sector, which has been under scrutiny following the release of quarterly results that did not meet analyst forecasts.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have also contributed to the negative sentiment in the market. Although FIIs purchased Indian equities worth Rs 1,166 crore on Friday, this figure was relatively low compared to the substantial outflows recorded throughout October. Notably, FIIs have been net sellers in nine of the eleven trading sessions this month, further exerting pressure on the domestic equity market.

Global Market Influences and Investor Behaviour

The Indian market’s decline was mirrored by a broader downturn in international markets. Japan’s Nikkei fell by 0.64 per cent, while Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite plunged over 5 per cent. In contrast, South Korea’s Kospi rose by approximately 2 per cent, as investors capitalised on recent declines in AI stocks. This divergence highlights the complex interplay between different markets and sectors.

Moreover, the recent volatility in crude oil prices has added to market uncertainties. Although Brent crude futures fell by more than 2 per cent, they remained above $107 per barrel. This fluctuation followed US President Donald Trump’s decision to waive sanctions on Russia, including those affecting its energy sector. The implications of this decision are still being evaluated, adding another layer of complexity to market dynamics.

As the Indian stock market continues to navigate these challenges, investors are likely to adopt a cautious approach, particularly in light of the recent gains. The decline on Monday followed a period of strong performance, with the Nifty gaining over 2 per cent in the previous sessions, prompting some investors to lock in profits amidst concerns over potential volatility.
