Background of Chathuranga Abeysinghe

Chathuranga Abeysinghe was elected to the Sri Lankan Parliament in 2024, representing the Colombo electoral district as a member of the National People’s Power (NPP). He assumed the role of Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development in November 2024. Born on November 22, 1983, Abeysinghe completed his early education at Nalanda College in Colombo, where he focused on commerce. He later attended the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, earning a special degree in finance in 2008, during which he was awarded a gold medal for academic excellence in his department.

In addition to his degree, Abeysinghe has pursued further qualifications in management accounting through the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), becoming an associate member in 2010. He has also worked towards the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) qualification, successfully completing Level II.

Abeysinghe’s educational background has equipped him with a strong foundation in finance and management, which he has applied throughout his professional career.

Professional Journey of Chathuranga Abeysinghe

Abeysinghe’s career commenced at MAS Investments, where he held the position of finance executive from 2007 to 2009, subsequently advancing to a financial analyst role. He then became a finance manager at Sabre Technologies. Between 2012 and 2014, he worked as a financial controller at MAS Akshaya Nellore in India before returning to MAS Holdings in Sri Lanka. His role there involved talent analytics, where he focused on leveraging data to enhance business decision-making.

From 2018 to 2022, Abeysinghe served as Lead Data Evangelist, concentrating on the integration of data and technology within business operations. Following this, he worked as an independent data science and analytics consultant from February 2022 until November 2024, further establishing his expertise in the field.

Community Engagement and Educational Contributions

In addition to his professional roles, Abeysinghe has actively contributed to the educational sector in Sri Lanka. He has served as a guest lecturer and panellist at various institutions, including the University of Colombo, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the University of Moratuwa, and the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT). His involvement in education reflects his commitment to sharing knowledge and fostering the next generation of professionals.

Furthermore, Abeysinghe has been a member of the advisory board for data science programmes at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, demonstrating his dedication to enhancing educational curricula in his area of expertise.
