In the aftermath of the murder of Sukhen Mahato, a 24-year-old migrant worker from Purulia, West Bengal, Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Member of Parliament, has raised concerns regarding the investigation being conducted by Maharashtra Police. Mahato was found dead while working in Pune, prompting Banerjee to offer legal assistance to Mahato’s family.
During a visit to the bereaved family, Banerjee declared that if the Maharashtra Police is unable to resolve the case effectively, TMC would take over the investigation. He stated, “If they cannot manage it, transfer the case to us; within 50 days, we will solve it.” This bold assertion was shared by Banerjee in a video released on his social media account. He emphasized the need for justice, urging the police to ensure that those responsible do not escape through bail.
Accusations Against Political Opponents
Banerjee did not shy away from addressing the political dynamics surrounding the case. He pointed out that Purulia is represented by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament and that Maharashtra is currently governed by the BJP. In this context, Banerjee called upon local MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato to prioritize justice over party affiliations and engage with authorities at both the state and central levels.
In his statements, Banerjee accused BJP leaders of neglecting the safety of residents in Bengal while focusing on obstructing the state’s funding. His comments reflect mounting tensions between the TMC and BJP, especially in light of Mahato’s murder, which has drawn widespread attention and concern.
West Bengal Chief Minister Calls for Action
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her outrage over the murder, labeling it a hate crime. In her view, Mahato was targeted for his language and identity, which she attributes to a growing culture of xenophobia in society. The Chief Minister demanded swift action from authorities to apprehend those responsible and deliver severe punishment.
Mamata Banerjee articulated her feelings in a post on social media, stating, “I am shaken, enraged, and sickened beyond words by the barbaric murder of Sukhen Mahato, a 24-year-old migrant worker from Bandwan in Purulia.” She called the incident emblematic of a larger issue whereby individuals are victimized due to their linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
To the family of the victim, she extended her condolences, affirming that the state of Bengal stands firmly with them in their time of grief. Emphasizing the need for immediate justice, she pledged that every possible effort would be made to ensure that the perpetrators face consequences for their actions.
