Russia Strikes Kyiv and Kharkiv Amid Ukrainian Attacks in Russian Territory

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a series of overnight strikes on July 8, 2026, three individuals were reported killed across Ukraine as a result of Russian drone and missile attacks. One casualty occurred in Kyiv, where powerful explosions were audible for the second consecutive night. The Ukrainian air force confirmed that Russia launched a total of 169 long-range strike drones and seven missiles, including five ballistic missiles, during these assaults.

The Ukrainian military stated that they managed to intercept and jam 139 of these drones, with two anti-radar missiles failing to reach their intended targets. Nevertheless, it acknowledged that five ballistic missiles and 20 drones successfully struck targets across 15 locations, highlighting the ongoing challenges facing Ukraine’s air defences.

In Kyiv, just after midnight, explosions were reported before authorities issued an air raid alert for civilians. The head of the Kyiv city administration, Tymur Tkachenko, noted that one woman lost her life and two others sustained injuries from the attacks. In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that two individuals were killed and another 20 injured in a separate series of strikes.

Damage and Infrastructure Impact in Ukraine

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported significant damage due to the attacks, which affected several administrative structures and warehouses, as well as a garage complex and multiple trams. In addition, regional head Ivan Fedorov from Zaporizhzhia indicated that a Russian-guided bomb injured a man and woman during the bombardments.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed it targeted arms industry facilities in Kyiv, including a plant responsible for manufacturing components for Flamingo cruise missiles and an assembly site for mid- and long-range drones. It also asserted that its air defences had downed 415 Ukrainian drones from late Tuesday to early Wednesday.

Ukrainian Strikes Reported Deep Inside Russia

On the Russian side, Saratov region Governor Roman Busargin indicated that a drone attack from Ukraine resulted in one death, several injuries, and damage to unspecified industrial facilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported successful long-range strikes that reached regions such as Saratov, Tatarstan, and Bashkortostan, along with the Voronezh region near the Ukrainian border.

Zelenskyy indicated that these attacks targeted oil refineries in Saratov and Tatarstan, marking the continuation of Ukraine’s efforts to strike energy infrastructure. Russia’s Gazprom confirmed that Ukrainian drones attacked the Krasnodarskaya compressor station, crucial for the Blue Stream natural gas pipeline serving Türkiye, although it reported that supplies were not disrupted.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov referred to these actions as another “dangerous” offensive against the global energy framework, urging Türkiye and other nations to caution Kyiv against further escalations. Additionally, Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyayev reported damages to industrial facilities and injuries to several individuals, though specific sites were not disclosed.

In the Rostov region, Governor Yuri Slyusar reported that Ukrainian drones caused damage to two oil tankers in Taganrog Bay, resulting in injuries to two crew members, necessitating the evacuation of one ship’s crew. He noted that there was no oil spill since the tankers were empty at the time.

The events of the night demonstrated the dual impact of the ongoing conflict, with both Ukrainian cities and Russian industrial areas suffering losses and damage as hostilities continue in the region.
