Uttarakhand CM Dhami Promises Action Against Badrinath Donation Embezzlement

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has stated that the alleged irregularities in the management of donations at the Badrinath temple are as serious as “cow slaughter.” He expressed that such acts are akin to harming one’s own family, indicating the gravity of the situation. Dhami emphasised zero tolerance towards any wrongdoing and affirmed the commitment to hold those responsible accountable.

During a media interaction in Haridwar, where he attended the concluding ceremony of Murari Bapu’s Shri Ram Katha, he remarked on the necessity of vigilance in temple administration. As public concern grew over the reported misappropriation, he announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is meticulously conducting an investigation in accordance with legal guidelines.

Dhami’s remarks come in light of a criminal case registered against Pramod Nautiyal, a Personal Assistant in the Office of the Chairman of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC). Allegations indicate that Nautiyal unlawfully diverted temple offerings for personal use, and he will be subjected to rigorous scrutiny by the authorities.

Details of Allegations Against a Temple Official

The FIR lodged at the Badrinath Police Station cites Sections 306 and 316(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The BKTC filed the complaint, alleging that Nautiyal misappropriated temple funds during the counting process of the Thali Bhent, or donation plate. This incident reportedly took place on July 2, when a preliminary inquiry revealed that a notable amount of funds was removed from the counting centre in a brief span of thirty minutes between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

Following initial findings, the BKTC took decisive action by suspending Nautiyal from his official position prior to initiating any formal legal measures. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are prioritising the integrity and transparency of the donation process at the temple.

On July 3, a show-cause notice was issued to Nautiyal shortly after the irregularities were identified. The BKTC also established a four-member inquiry committee tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation to ensure a fair assessment of the allegations against him.

State Government’s Readiness for Monsoon and Ongoing Investigations

While addressing the media, Chief Minister Dhami reiterated the government’s preparedness to handle challenges posed by the ongoing monsoon season, signifying broader state priorities amidst the unfolding temple controversy. His comments reflect an overarching commitment to both administrative accountability and disaster management.

As the situation develops, public sentiment remains focused on the integrity of the temple’s financial processes. The state’s actions, particularly through the SIT, aim to reassure the community that fraudulent activities will not be tolerated and that futures actions will strive to protect the sanctity of religious sites.

The response from the Uttarakhand government highlights the significance of maintaining trust among devotees and the wider public. The Badrinath temple, revered as one of India’s sacred sites, is now under intense scrutiny as authorities aim for a transparent resolution of these serious allegations.
