28-Year-Old Arrested for Sending Hoax Bomb Threat Emails Across India

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant development has occurred in the investigation of numerous hoax bomb threats that instilled fear across various Indian cities. The Gujarat Crime Branch, alongside the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Unit, apprehended 28-year-old Sourav Biswas from West Bengal for allegedly dispatching threatening emails targeting schools, courts, metro stations, and financial institutions throughout the country. This arrest is being regarded as a major breakthrough in addressing the recent surge of menacing emails that alarmed both security agencies and the general populace.

Details of the Threats Sent

Authorities revealed that Biswas purportedly sent over 50 bomb threat emails in the span of five days to locations in metropolitan areas including Mumbai, Delhi, and Gujarat, among others. Notable targets of these threats included educational institutions, metro stations, and even the Mumbai stock exchange. On February 27, the suspect sent threatening messages around 8:46 AM to several schools and metro stations in Mumbai, warning of impending bomb blasts within two days. The alarming content of the email prompted immediate reactions from security agencies, leading to emergency checks and the evacuation of numerous locations.

Investigation and Tracking Efforts

In response to this threat, a case was initiated at the Dindoshi Police Station in Mumbai, launching a technical investigation to trace the origin of the emails. Cyber specialists initiated efforts to track the digital fingerprints of the email, eventually pinpointing the source to the New Barrackpore area of West Bengal. Police teams were deployed to the state to apprehend the suspect.

Prior Incidents and Apprehension

During the course of the investigation, it was uncovered that Biswas had previously sent a similar threatening email in Ahmedabad on February 16, which had already led to the filing of a separate case by the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Police. Utilizing intelligence inputs and digital tracking, officials from the Ahmedabad Crime Branch detained the suspect on March 1. Subsequently, the Mumbai Police took charge of the custody as part of their ongoing inquiry.

Current Status and Interrogation

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that Biswas is currently in custody and is undergoing remand. Investigators are actively questioning him to ascertain his motives behind sending the threats, the technology employed in dispatching the emails, and whether he acted alone or with accomplices as part of a larger operation. Preliminary questioning has indicated that the threats might have been intended to incite panic, although authorities are exploring a range of possibilities.
