The CSR Journal Magazine

Diwali festivities commenced across New York City, with Times Square serving as a focal point for cultural events and culinary showcases that celebrated Indian traditions. Thousands from the Indian and South Asian diaspora gathered on Sunday for a day-long programme, which included various activities highlighting the rich cultural and culinary diversity of India. The event aimed to foster community spirit and unity among attendees.

The 2026 edition of ‘Diwali at Times Square’ featured several engaging activities, including a ‘Diwali Bazaar’, a diya-lighting ceremony, and a virtual countdown to Diwali at the One Times Square Ball Drop Tower. Additionally, the ‘Light Up Times Square Concert’ showcased performances from notable artists such as American rapper Raja Kumari and singer Kanika Kapoor, among others.

Binaya Pradhan, the Consul General of India in New York, participated in the celebrations alongside members of the Indian-American community and other attendees. The Indian Consulate described the festivities as a vibrant celebration of peace, hope, and harmony, emphasising the strong people-to-people ties that connect India and the United States.

Message of Peace and Unity

Neeta Bhasin, the founder and organiser of Diwali at Times Square, expressed that the event’s primary objective was to promote peace, harmony, and unity while showcasing India’s rich art and culture. Bhasin stated, “This celebration is about peace, harmony, and unity. That is the true message of Diwali.” She highlighted the significance of using Times Square as a platform to present India’s diverse cultural heritage.

Since its inception in 2013, Diwali at Times Square has aimed to bring the spirit of the festival of lights to what is often referred to as the “crossroads of the world.” The event has provided a significant platform for celebrating unity and cultural diversity, allowing attendees to engage with various aspects of Indian culture.

Sibu Nair, the director of Asian American Affairs for New York Governor Kathy Hochul, remarked on the pride of representing the governor at such an important event. He noted the significance of celebrating Diwali with community members who had travelled from various parts of the state to share their cultural heritage, food, and music.

Culinary Highlights and Community Gatherings

In addition to the main festivities at Times Square, The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, hosted a separate Diwali event that attracted prominent figures from the Indian-American and global communities. This event featured a collaboration with three renowned New York restaurants—’Chatti’, ‘Junoon’, and ‘Musaafer’—to present a specially curated ‘Culinary Journey Through India’. Attendees enjoyed a diverse array of regional flavours from across the country, enhancing the cultural experience of the celebrations.

The various cultural performances, community gatherings, and food showcases throughout the city served to unite New York’s Indian and South Asian communities in celebration of Diwali. The events not only highlighted India’s cultural diversity but also reinforced the importance of community and shared traditions, making the festival of lights a memorable occasion for all involved.

Overall, the Diwali celebrations in New York City exemplified the vibrant spirit of the festival, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to honour Indian culture and cuisine. The events at Times Square and other venues across the city successfully fostered a sense of unity and celebration among attendees, making it a significant occasion in the city’s cultural calendar.
