Next-Gen Hyundai Creta May Launch Seven-Seater, Impacting Alcazar

The CSR Journal Magazine

The next-generation Hyundai Creta may feature a seven-seater variant, which could significantly alter the company’s three-row SUV strategy in India. This new model is expected to be launched around the same time as the next-gen SUV, potentially appealing to families seeking more seating capacity. The seven-seater version will likely share its foundational architecture with the standard Creta while incorporating unique design elements to differentiate it.

As the third-generation Creta, internally referred to as SX3, undergoes real-world testing, it is anticipated to offer both five-seater and seven-seater configurations. This dual offering could enhance Hyundai’s competitiveness in the mid-size SUV market, particularly for consumers prioritising family-friendly vehicles. The introduction of a seven-seater model may also raise questions about the future of the Hyundai Alcazar, which currently serves as the brand’s three-row SUV option in India.

The new Creta is expected to utilise Hyundai-Kia’s latest K3 platform, which is also the foundation for the updated Kia Seltos. This platform is designed to improve structural integrity, safety features, and interior space. Although the exact specifications are yet to be confirmed, the new SUV may have a longer wheelbase and larger dimensions compared to its predecessor.

Impact on the Hyundai Alcazar

The potential launch of a seven-seater Creta could lead Hyundai to reassess the Alcazar’s role within its Indian lineup. The Alcazar, marketed as the Creta Grand in international markets, competes with notable models such as the Mahindra Scorpio-N, Tata Safari, and MG Hector Plus. Recently, the Alcazar received a significant update in 2024, which included changes to its exterior design, interior features, and technological enhancements.

The Alcazar shares engine options with the Creta, including a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that delivers 160 bhp and 253 Nm of torque, as well as a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 116 bhp and 250 Nm. The petrol variant is available with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the diesel variant offers a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic. Should Hyundai proceed with the seven-seater Creta, both models may vie for the same customer base.

Utilising the Creta nameplate for a seven-seater variant could leverage the existing popularity of the model, but Hyundai has yet to officially announce any plans to discontinue the Alcazar. Consequently, the future of the Alcazar remains uncertain as the company navigates its SUV offerings.

Possible Hybrid Powertrain for the Next-Gen Creta

The next-generation Creta is likely to retain the familiar engine options available in India, including the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, and 1.5-litre diesel engines, which will be paired with both manual and automatic transmissions. Additionally, there is speculation that a strong-hybrid powertrain could be introduced as part of the new lineup.

Hyundai is reportedly exploring greater hybridisation for the Indian market, with the next Creta potentially following a similar path as the upcoming Kia Seltos, which is set to feature a hybrid variant by 2027. If Hyundai opts to include a strong-hybrid setup, it is plausible that the seven-seater configuration could be one of the applications for this technology.

This hybrid powertrain could attract family-oriented buyers looking for enhanced fuel efficiency without transitioning to an electric vehicle. However, specific details regarding the hybrid options and their availability remain unconfirmed at this stage.
