Zubeen Garg was posthumously recognised at the Filmfare Awards Assamese 2026 in Guwahati, prior to the main event. The Filmfare team paid a visit to the late artist’s residence to celebrate his significant contributions to Assamese music and cinema. Three esteemed awards were presented to his family, highlighting his lasting influence in the industry. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, accepted the awards on his behalf, representing his enduring legacy.

A Lifetime of Musical Achievement

Garg was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in acknowledgment of his remarkable contributions to music and cinema. This distinction reflects his profound impact on the cultural landscape of Assam. In addition to this honour, he received the Special Recognition Award for the song “Roi Roi Binale,” which continues to evoke strong emotions among audiences, underscoring its timeless relevance. Furthermore, he was celebrated with the Best Playback Singer (Male) award for his performance in “Agoli Anubhabe” from the film “Rudra,” reinforcing his reputation as a masterful playback singer.

Heartfelt Remembrance

The visit to Zubeen Garg’s home was an emotional occasion, as the Filmfare team shared anecdotes from his artistic journey, reflecting on the indelible mark he left on Assamese music. The gathering was filled with sincere tributes, showcasing the affection and respect he garnered throughout his career. His contributions continue to resonate with many, and this recognition serves as a poignant reminder of his artistic legacy.

Tragic Circumstances Surrounding His Death

Garg tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, while swimming in Singapore, where he was serving as a cultural brand ambassador for the North East India Festival. Despite authorities in Singapore ruling out foul play, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suggested that Garg’s death should not be considered accidental, labelling it as a case of “plain and simple” murder. In response, the Assam government established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to explore the circumstances leading to the singer’s demise.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

A case was filed under several sections, including criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing death by negligence. Subsequently, murder charges were incorporated into the investigation. The ongoing legal proceedings aim to uncover the truth behind the events surrounding his untimely death, as fans and the music community continue to mourn the loss of a cherished musician.
