On the first anniversary of Zubeen Garg’s death, a significant number of fans congregated at Zubeen Khetra in Sonapur to honour the memory of the renowned Assamese singer. The gathering, which took place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, included not only fans but also family members, artists, and representatives of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).

Those present at the temporary memorial site, located on the outskirts of Guwahati, engaged in singing some of Garg’s most beloved songs as a way to pay their respects. The atmosphere was filled with both celebration and solemn remembrance as attendees reflected on the impact Garg had on the music scene.

AASU Remembers Garg’s Contributions

The Chief Advisor of AASU, Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya, highlighted the importance of the gathering as a tribute to the late singer while also calling attention to the ongoing demand for justice regarding circumstances surrounding his death. In his statements to ANI, Bhattacharya said, “Today we are here to pay our respects to Zubeen Garg. One year has passed since the unexpected incident… Zubeen Garg must get justice.”

Utpal Sarma, the President of AASU, added further context to the significance of the day. He remarked, “Today was the day when Zubeen Garg passed away… his creations will be celebrated throughout Assam.” Sarma emphasised the necessity for future generations to be aware of Garg’s contributions to Assamese culture, particularly noting how he transformed his performances into platforms for social issues, including wildlife conservation.

In a poignant reminder of Garg’s humanitarian efforts, Sarma recalled how, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Garg had opened one of his residences for use as a quarantine centre, demonstrating his commitment to the community. He expressed hope that the values associated with Garg’s artistic legacy will continue to inspire the youth of Assam.

Cultural Commemorations Organised by Assam Government

In addition to the fan-led tributes, the Assam government has organised a three-day programme through its Cultural Affairs Department in honour of Zubeen Garg. This event commenced on September 17 and is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, September 19. The programme aims to celebrate the singer’s extensive contributions to Assamese music and culture.

Zubeen Garg’s career, spanning several decades, featured thousands of recordings across multiple languages. He gained widespread recognition beyond Assam with the hit song “Ya Ali” from the Hindi film ‘Gangster,’ which was released in 2006 and starred Kangana Ranaut.

Throughout his life, Garg remained deeply connected to his Assamese roots, blending traditional sounds with contemporary music styles. His work has solidified his status as one of the most prominent voices from Northeast India, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to resonate with people, not only in Assam but across the country.
