Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy voiced significant concerns on Wednesday regarding the involvement of citizens from India and 46 other countries in the ongoing conflict with Russia. During his address at the UN General Assembly, he called for these governments to take necessary actions to shield their nationals from being further embroiled in the war. Zelenskyy specifically pointed out that Russian forces were reportedly utilising individuals from various nations, including Ghana, Nepal, Tajikistan, Yemen, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Belarus, Sudan, and South Africa, in military operations in Ukraine.

As he highlighted the gravity of the situation, he urged representatives from the 47 affected nations to ensure their citizens’ safety and prevent them from being sent to combat zones. He remarked on the urgency of the matter, conveying that governments must prioritise the welfare of their people and act before more individuals become victims of the conflict. “I want to speak directly to every representative of these 47 countries,” Zelenskyy stated, emphasising the responsibility leaders have towards their citizens.

In his address, he cautioned, “Do not let Putin drag you into this war. Do not allow Russia to use your citizens as pawns in its conflict.” This warning comes as Ukraine seeks to garner international backing as the war continues into another winter. Ukraine is also requesting enhanced air-defence systems, particularly the Patriot interceptors, amidst ongoing attacks from Russian missile and drone strikes targeting critical infrastructure.

Zelenskyy Criticises the Russian Leadership

In a poignant part of his speech, Zelenskyy referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as “Patient Zero,” attributing the escalation of warfare and its global implications directly to him. He accused Putin of enabling the spread of war, resulting in widespread suffering, instability, and crises. “Russia’s leader, patient zero, the man from whom this war began, must be stopped,” he declared, indicating that the consequences of continued conflict could expand further into the world.

The Ukrainian President remarked on the challenges anticipated for the upcoming winter, suggesting that Kyiv might retaliate against increased Russian aggression. He asserted, “This winter could be very harsh for us, but in response, we will have no choice but to make it painful for Russia too.” Zelenskyy expressed that as long as Putin continues to act with impunity, the international community remains at risk.

In discussing economic measures, he urged other nations to consider similar sanctions to those recently imposed by the United States, which enable the government to impose significant tariffs on countries engaging in trade with Russia. Zelenskyy highlighted that restricting trade with Moscow is fundamental to disrupting its war efforts.

India’s Role in Mitigating Conflict Effects

Despite addressing the involvement of various nations in the conflict, Zelenskyy acknowledged India’s efforts towards alleviating the broader impacts of warfare. Addressing the Ukraine-led Crimean Platform summit in New York, he mentioned that India, along with Egypt and Turkey, has proposed measures aimed at restoring safe commercial shipping in the Black Sea.

He reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to collaborate on a maritime truce and is currently awaiting Russia’s response regarding this initiative. He emphasised the importance of the Black Sea as a significant route for grain and other commodities, noting how disruptions from the war have severely affected global trade, particularly for countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa that rely heavily on supplies from this region.

Zelenskyy mentioned the recent assaults on Indian seafarers and the subsequent concerns that have arisen from these incidents. In conclusion, Zelenskyy’s address highlighted the urgent need for global unity against the impacts of conflict while reaffirming Ukraine’s commitment to collaborate with international partners to navigate the ongoing crisis.
