Sharif Osman Hadi, 32, leader of Bangladesh’s 2024 uprising, who was critically injured after an assassination attempt, passed away in Singapore during treatment, officials said on Friday.
What happened to Sharif Osman Hadi?
Sharif was shot by a masked attacker a week back while he was heading back home from a mosque in Dhaka, Bangladesh, he was wounded in the ear.
On Friday Singapore authorities shared this information about his death, “Despite the best efforts of the doctors…, Mr Hadi succumbed to his injuries,” said authorities in a statement. Singapore authorities are assisting Bangladeshi authorities to repatriate his body.

Who was Sharif Osman Hadi?
The 32-year-old Hadi was a candidate in the February 2026 elections. This would be the first parliamentary poll after the Hasina government was overturned by the student uprising last year.
After being shot on Monday, Hadi was airlifted to Singapore for treatment after being shot in public in the head. His death was confirmed by the Yunus government. Yunus said in a statement, “I express my deepest condolences. His demise is an irreparable loss for the nation.”
In a television speech, Yunus said, “The country’s march toward democracy cannot be halted through fear, terror, or bloodshed,” he said in a televised speech. The Yunus government has also announced special prayers and state mourning for half day on Saturday. Hadi was an active leader of Hadi Inqilab Mancha, a student group, he was a critic of India.

Bangladeshi police have launched a manhunt for the gunmen who shot Hadi brutally. Two pictures of suspects have been released and a bounty of five million taka (about $42,000) has been announced for those who give information about the suspects.

Yunus in a television interview called this attack premeditated, he called out a powerful network behind the attack, without sharing other key details and name of the group. ” The objective of the conspirators is to derail the election”, he noted that the attack on Hadi was ‘symbolic’ and was done to demonstrate strength and sabotage the entire electoral process.
