A 36-year-old woman has been accused of orchestrating the murder of her 69-year-old mother-in-law in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, in collusion with her 21-year-old lover. The victim, Nirmala Devi, was reportedly bound and strangled within her own home. The authorities were able to unravel the scheme through CCTV footage and assistance from a sniffer dog, which directed them to the suspects.

Discovery of the Crime Scene

The attack is believed to have occurred in the early afternoon hours, during a time when the household was relatively empty. It was noted that Ranjana Verma’s husband was at work, and her son was temporarily away on a delivery. The only individuals present were Ranjana, her toddler, and her mother-in-law. Initial findings indicated that the elderly woman’s arms and legs had been restrained prior to her being strangled.

Staging the Crime

After the murder, Ranjana reportedly attempted to stage the crime as a robbery in an effort to mislead the police. She displayed dramatic grief upon her son’s return to the home, where he discovered the lifeless body of his grandmother. This act of innocence was short-lived, as investigators soon began noticing discrepancies in the crime scene.

CCTV Evidence

Further inquiries revealed that the home’s indoor CCTV camera had mysteriously been turned off during the critical hours surrounding the murder. External footage additionally captured Ranjana and Rajan departing the residence around the time of the incident. Authorities suspect this was a deliberate move to avoid detection. It was revealed that the suspects later turned the camera back on using a mobile device, indicating a premeditated effort to manipulate the situation.

Relationship and Motive

Investigations disclosed that Ranjana and Rajan had maintained a romantic relationship for four years. Rajan had been residing as a tenant on the same premises, which heightened suspicions within Ranjana’s family, particularly from Nirmala Devi, who strongly opposed their connection. Frequent disputes over the affair reportedly occurred, leading to escalating tensions within the household.

Investigative Breakthrough

The investigation intensified as police and a forensic team, accompanied by a sniffer dog unit, arrived at the scene. The sniffer dog tracked the scent directly to Rajan, raising alarms among witnesses present. Subsequent interrogation of Rajan revealed anxious behavior, prompting further questioning. Under continuous scrutiny, Rajan eventually confessed that the motive behind the murder was to eliminate Nirmala, as she posed a significant obstacle to their relationship.

Legal Action

Based on a formal complaint lodged by Nirmala Devi’s son, law enforcement has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against both Ranjana Verma and Rajan Sharma. Following this, both suspects were taken into custody and are currently under police detention while further investigations continue.
