Mosquito Control Initiatives in Faizullaganj by Lucknow Municipal Corporation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has initiated a comprehensive mosquito control programme in Faizullaganj, deploying 64 pumps in Zones 3 and 6. This move aims to address the challenges posed by stagnant water and accumulated silt in flood-affected areas. Additionally, 12 TMX desilting machines have been mobilised to clear drains, septic tanks, and waterlogged spots, which have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar reported that the civic body has intensified its sanitation and vector-control measures. Approximately 1,500 personnel are engaged in relief and clean-up operations to mitigate the effects of flooding. In Faizullaganj alone, 52 pumps are actively draining accumulated water, while anti-larval spraying has been conducted over 56 acres using three drones to combat mosquito proliferation.

Fogging operations have also been implemented, covering around 18 kilometres of lanes in the flood-affected regions. These measures are crucial for restoring sanitation and improving drainage as floodwaters recede, thereby addressing the public health risks associated with stagnant water and silt accumulation.

Focus on Sanitation and Hygiene

The clean-up drive is primarily aimed at restoring drainage systems and enhancing hygiene in the affected localities. Officials have been instructed to prioritise the removal of water, cleaning of drains, collection of waste, and control of mosquito populations, especially in areas where water continues to stagnate. The LMC’s proactive approach is essential for ensuring the health and safety of residents in these regions.

For the fogging operations, the LMC has deployed a combination of four large and ten small machines. Furthermore, six tankers are being utilised to spray sodium hypochlorite as part of the sanitation measures. This multi-faceted approach is designed to tackle the various challenges posed by the flooding and its aftermath.

In Zone 6, the LMC has strengthened waste collection efforts by deploying 176 three-wheeler vehicles dedicated to collecting household garbage. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that waste does not contribute to further health hazards in the wake of the floods. The deployment of around 55 Tata Ace vehicles, eight tractors, and eight mechanical road-sweeping machines further underscores the LMC’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness in the affected areas.

Leadership and Coordination Efforts

Mayor Sushma Kharkwal, alongside Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar, has directed officials to prioritise drainage and ensure that teams are actively clearing silt and stagnant water. The emphasis on maintaining accessible routes in affected areas is critical for facilitating relief efforts and ensuring that residents can navigate their surroundings safely.

The LMC’s coordinated efforts reflect a comprehensive strategy to address the immediate challenges posed by the floods while also laying the groundwork for long-term improvements in sanitation and public health. By mobilising resources effectively and engaging a significant workforce, the civic body aims to restore normalcy in the flood-hit regions.

The ongoing operations in Faizullaganj serve as a vital response to the public health risks associated with flooding. The measures taken by the LMC are designed not only to alleviate the current situation but also to prevent future outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases, thereby safeguarding the health of the community.
