Wild Elephant Kills Man Outside Home in Malampuzha During Early Morning Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident occurred in Malampuzha, where a wild elephant fatally attacked a local resident while he was sleeping outside his home. The event transpired in the early hours of Thursday, May 14, 2026, around 3:45 a.m. near Vellezhuthampotta. The deceased has been identified as A Chandran, a native of the area. He was reportedly resting by the roadside when a tusker emerged from the nearby forest and charged at him.

Chandran was among a group of individuals who were spending the night outdoors when the attack occurred. While he did not survive, his family members were fortunate enough to escape unharmed. The proximity of Chandran’s home to the forest was highlighted, with only a road separating the two.

Upon witnessing the incident, nearby villagers acted quickly, transporting Chandran to the Palakkad District Hospital. However, medical personnel declared him dead upon arrival due to the severity of his injuries sustained during the attack.

Previous Elephant Incident in Angamaly

This tragic event follows another elephant-related incident that happened earlier in May near the Kidangoor Mahavishnu Temple in Angamaly. In that case, an out-of-control elephant, identified as “Mayyanad Parthasarathy,” resulted in the death of a man named Vishnu, who was a driver involved in efforts to restrain the animal. He was trampled to death while attempting to aid in controlling the rampaging elephant.

During the disturbance, which lasted for several hours, the elephant injured another mahout, Pradeep, who was later admitted to Little Flower Hospital. His injuries were reported as non-serious. The chaos occurred when the elephant, tethered for a temple festival, suddenly became aggressive, prompting many locals to flee in fear.

Concerns grew as the elephant caused damage to several parked vehicles in the area. Given the dense population and proximity to residential zones, officials were heightened in their alertness about the potential for the elephant to enter inhabited areas. It took significant efforts to bring the situation under control.

Efforts to Control the Elephant

Following the incident in Angamaly, official teams quickly sprang into action upon receiving reports of the chaotic situation. Binu, a member of an elephant task force, stated that they received an urgent call about the aggressive behaviour of the elephant. He described the urgency of their response, swiftly arriving at the location once the call was made.

The team faced challenges in their attempts to subdue the elephant, as it continued charging at them aggressively. A veterinarian was summoned to the scene and managed to tranquilise the elephant with a dart before it could cause further harm. After being given sedation, the elephant was secured and brought under control.

As of now, authorities have reported that the immediate situation has stabilised, with no further threats posed by the elephant. Officials confirmed that the area is now safe and expressed relief that the situation did not escalate further. Measures are likely to be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
