Why Is Kerala Celebrating Eid Today rest of India will Celebrate it Tomorrow?

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kerala is observing Eid-ul-Fitr today, while the majority of India will celebrate the festival tomorrow. This difference is attributed to the sighting of the crescent moon, which signifies the conclusion of Ramadan and the onset of Eid.

In Kerala, religious authorities confirmed the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon on Thursday evening, particularly in coastal regions of the state. Consequently, Friday has been designated as the first day of Shawwal, initiating the Eid festivities.

Fasting Continues in Other Regions

In contrast, numerous areas across India, including Delhi and various northern states, reported no confirmed sightings of the moon. As a result, residents in these regions are observing Friday as the final day of Ramadan, with Eid celebrations scheduled for Saturday. This timing means that many Muslims nationwide will complete a full 30 days of fasting this year prior to their Eid observance.

Understanding the Importance of Moon Sighting

Eid-ul-Fitr does not adhere to a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar; rather, it is established based on the Islamic lunar calendar, which relies on the visual confirmation of the crescent moon.

Due to geographical and meteorological variations, the crescent may be visible in some areas while remaining obscured in others, making such discrepancies in festival dates relatively commonplace. Given that the moon was not sighted in most parts of India, Muslims outside Kerala will observe an additional day of fasting this year. Last year, Ramadan lasted 29 days in many locations, but this year, it extends to a full 30 days for the majority of the country.

Shared Spirit of Eid Across the Nation

Despite the differing dates for celebrations, the core essence of Eid remains uniform across India. The festival is a time characterized by prayers, expressions of gratitude, charitable acts, and moments spent with family and friends.

Religious leaders have emphasized the significance of fostering unity and harmony throughout the celebrations. While Kerala begins its festivities today, the remainder of India will join in tomorrow, highlighting that despite the variations in timings, the fundamental spirit of Eid is shared and remains unwavering.
