Kunal Ghosh, a leader from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has directed criticism towards Humayun Kabir, the Chief of the Jan Unnayan Party, regarding his ongoing ‘Babri Yatra.’ This march, which started from Plassey in Nadia district, will conclude in Rejinagar, Murshidabad district.
Ghosh mocked the physical nature of the 285-km march, stating that Kabir’s doctor likely advised him to walk due to “sugar or excess fat,” and he was simply using the medical advice as a publicity opportunity. The TMC leader questioned Kabir’s sudden “love for Babri Masjid,” pointing out that Kabir contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket—the very party associated with the mosque’s demolition.
Kunal Ghosh categorized Kabir as a “BJP puppet” deployed on the eve of elections to divide the anti-BJP vote bank in West Bengal. He emphasized that while anyone in a democracy can visit or build places of worship, Kabir’s actions are “political marketing” rather than genuine religious respect.
Details of the ‘Babri Yatra’
On February 12, Humayun Kabir inaugurated the ‘Babri Yatra,’ intending to cover a distance of 285 kilometers while addressing issues related to the construction of the Babri Masjid. During the march, he announced the initiation of work on the mosque, confirming that the construction phase aims to be completed within two years. He expressed appreciation for the support of his followers, stating that the construction of a new mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad, has started once the yatra commenced.
Political Reactions to the Proposed Mosque
In response to Kabir’s initiative, Keshav Prasad Maurya, the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, voiced strong opposition to the construction of a mosque named after Babur. He asserted that such a mosque would not be erected, and if it were built, it would not endure. Maurya emphasized India’s cultural heritage, noting that the nation’s devotees are centered around figures like Lord Ram, Lord Krishna, and Lord Shiva. He clarified that objections are not against mosque construction in general but specifically regarding the name associated with it.
Statements from Uttar Pradesh Officials
Additional comments from Uttar Pradesh Minister Anil Rajbhar echoed Maurya’s sentiments, reinforcing the idea that a mosque named after a “plunderer” will not be accepted, while still recognizing that there is no issue with mosques being built. As part of the escalating tensions, an FIR has been filed against Humayun Kabir concerning the construction of the Babri Masjid. These developments emphasize the growing contention surrounding this sensitive topic in contemporary Indian politics.
