West Bengal: Tea seller buys scooty for daughter by saving Rs 79,000 in piggy bank!

The CSR Journal Magazine

Up to what extent can you go to chase your dream? Here is a story about a common man from West Bengal who made an astonishing effort to fulfil his daughter’s dream!

In a quiet corner of Moula Paramanandapur village, in Chandrakona block number one of West Midnapore district, stands a small tea shop run by Bachhu Choudhury. Every day, he serves tea to villagers, never imagining that one day, his story would become the talk of the town!

For nearly four years, the tea seller had been carefully saving every rupee from his daily earnings. He filled an entire drum with small notes and coins, never touching them, dreaming of one thing — to buy her daughter a scooty.

One fine morning, he finally made that dream come true. Carrying the heavy drum filled with cash — totalling Rs 69,000, Bachchu and his daughter walked into a motorbike showroom in Gosai Bazar in Chandrakona Town.

Talking about his dream come true moment, tea shop owner Bachchu Chowdhury told The CSR Journal, “I run a small tea shop. I have saved one and two rupee coins in the past four years in a piggy bank. My daughter had been asking me for a scooter but I could not afford one at that time. But I did not want to say no to her also, so I started saving money. My daughter had also saved Rs 10,000 in cash for buying the scooter which she gave me. And finally today her dream has come true.”

7-8 showroom staff counted the coins for over 2 hours

The showroom staff were in for a shock when Bachchu asked them if he would accept coins and small notes for a scooty! What followed was pure astonishment. The tea seller poured out the savings — bundles of small notes and coins — right on the counter. It took eight staff nearly two hours to count every rupee. In the end, the total stood at Rs 79,000 just enough for a brand-new scooty.

Sharing his experience, showroom staff Arindam told The CSR Journal, “A man came to our two wheeler showroom this morning accompanied by his daughter and selected a scooter. When we were about to make the bill then he told us that I have brought coins and small notes for buying this scooter. Will you accept? We were in for a shock as we poured the jars full of coins on the showroom floor. It took 7-8 of us to count all the notes and coins almost two hours. Rs 69,000 in coins and the rest in notes.”

The father carried not just a drum of savings, but a heart full of dreams for his daughter. Bachhu’s story proves that ordinary people do create extraordinary moments if there is grit and determination. Some stories don’t need applause; they just need to be told.
